INTRODUCTION TO DRUGS
Drug:
• A drug is any substance that alters
normal bodily function, resulting any
psychological or behavioral change.
• Drug is a substance used to treat an illness.
DRUG ADDICTION &ABUSE
• Illegally indulgence in drugs is
referred to drug abuse
• Dependency on drugs (pathologic-condition)
illegally, by prolonged drug abuse is “Drug
Addiction”
ADOLESCENT ADDICTION
USAGE BY YOUTH IN GRADES 9 -12
• Alcohol: 82%
• Marijuana: 31%
• Inhalants: 13%
• Meth.: 8%

CURRENT TRENDS ADOLESCENT ADDICTION
• 26% of youth have their first drink of alcohol before the age of
17.
• 28% of all fatal alcohol related motor vehicle accidents involve
youth between 15 –23.
• Alcohol is a major factor in 50% of all motor vehicle accidents,
homicides, and suicides among youth.
TYPES OF DRUGS
Alcohol:
Is sold as

Prescription Drugs:
• These are medicines whose unneeded taken, are very
dangerous drugs
• These are of three types:
1. pain relievers
2. Sedatives
3. stimulants.
Marijuana:
• Also known as:
• Mary Jane
• pot
• weed
• ganja
Tobacco:
Tobacco comes in the forms of:
• cigarettes
• cigars
• smokeless tobacco
• hookah
Ecstasy:
• commonly referred to as “E” or “X”
• considered a club drug because of its stimulating
effects.
Inhalants:
It has several types:
• spray paint
• Glue
• fingernail polish
• Gasoline
• Cleaning fluid
Cough Medicines:
The ingredient in cough medicine is
dextromethorphan (DXM).
DXM is chemically similar to morphine
Methamphetamine:
Commonly known as Speed, meth,
Glass, crystal etc.
It is cocaine, turned into a crystal.
Amphetamine:
• This form is on the market as Benzedrine.
• Sometimes used to treat obesity,
narcolepsy, and attention deficit.
• Stimulant that are injected, smoked,
snorted, or ingested.
CAUSES OF DRUG ADDICTION
PEER PRESSURE
Social pressure by members of one’s peer
group to adopt certain values.
• Reason(acceptance by peers)
• Bad company
• Lack of family care

INITIATION

attributed to substance addictions.

arrested for a serious crime, such
as, murder, robbery, and assault.
SURVEYS
1. In Pakistan, the issue of drug addiction is often overshadowed by
the many of the Pakistan's other human development problems,
such as poverty, illiteracy and lack of basic health care, child
labor and other problems such as terrorism, shortage of power
resources, economic problems etc.
2. The Drug Use in Pakistan 2013 Survey Report, a collaborative
research by the Narcotics Control Division, Pakistan Bureau of
Statistics and the UN, states that there are 7.6 million drug
addicts in the country, out of which 78 present are men and 22
present women.
3. The number of drug users is particularly high in the Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, where close to 11 percent of
the population is hooked on drugs. In 2013, the number of drug
users in Balochistan was 280,000.
6. The number of injection drug users has sharply increased in recent years.
In 2007, Pakistan had an estimated 90,000 injecting drug users, but the
number had risen to around 500,000 by 2014.
7. Tobacco use results in 430,700 deaths and alcohol abuse causes 100,000
deaths annually. Although an estimated 16,000 deaths annually are
attributed to illegal drug use, this is probably a conservative number.
REMEDIES

Risk factors are those influences which increase the
chances of using ,misusing
and abusing drugs.

3.Rejection of pro-social values.
4.Alienation and rebelliousness.
5.Ties to the deviant peers.
6.Family members do not spend much time
together.
7.No sense of “connection” to community.
RROTECTIVE MEASURES
1.Knowledge regarding risks associated with substance’s
abuse.
2.Negative attitude towards substance and substance use.
3.Have positive future plans.
