INTRODUCTION TO DRUGS
Drug:
• A drug is any substance that alters
normal bodily function, resulting any
psychological or behavioral change.
• Drug is a substance used to treat an illness.
DRUG ADDICTION &ABUSE
• Illegally indulgence in drugs is
referred to drug abuse
• Dependency on drugs (pathologic-condition)
illegally, by prolonged drug abuse is “Drug
Addiction”

USAGE BY YOUTH IN GRADES 9 -12
• Alcohol: 82%
• Marijuana: 31%
• Inhalants: 13%
• Meth.: 8%
• Cocaine: 7%
• 26% of youth have their first drink of alcohol before the age of
17.
• 28% of all fatal alcohol related motor vehicle accidents involve
youth between 15 –23.
• Alcohol is a major factor in 50% of all motor vehicle accidents,
homicides, and suicides among youth.

Prescription Drugs:
• These are medicines whose unneeded taken, are very
dangerous drugs

Marijuana:
• Also known as:
• Mary Jane

Tobacco:
Tobacco comes in the forms of:
• cigarettes
• cigars
• smokeless tobacco
• hookah
Ecstasy:
• commonly referred to as “E” or “X”
• considered a club drug because of its stimulating
effects.
Inhalants:
It has several types:
• spray paint
• Glue
• fingernail polish
• Gasoline
• Cleaning fluid
Cough Medicines:
The ingredient in cough medicine is
dextromethorphan (DXM).
DXM is chemically similar to morphine
Methamphetamine:
Commonly known as Speed, meth,
Glass, crystal etc.
It is cocaine, turned into a crystal.
Amphetamine:
• This form is on the market as Benzedrine.
• Sometimes used to treat obesity,
narcolepsy, and attention deficit.
• Stimulant that are injected, smoked,
snorted, or ingested.
