FOLK DANCE

ITIK – ITIK
What is Folk Dance?
Folk dances are dances that are developed by people that
reflect the life of the people of a certain country or region.
Not all ethnic dances are folk dances; for example, ritual
dances or dances of ritual origin are not considered to be
folk dances. Ritual dances are usually called “Religious
dances” because of their purpose.
What is
ITIK – ITIK?
Itik-Itik is a Philippine folk dance said to have originated
from the province of Surigao in Mindanao.

Itik-itik is a mimetic dance because its steps mimic or

imitate the movements of duck. A duck, in Tagalog, is Itik,
thus the name of the dance.

It has many variations of steps from which the dancers

choose and combine. Its steps are similar to the
movement of a duck (itik in Filipino), as it walks with short,
choppy steps and splashes water on its back while
attracting its mate. It is used in folk dances in different
parts of the Philippines.
History of Itik - Itik

According to folklore, itik-itik was created long ago by a

young woman named Kanang, who was the best dancer
in Surigao. During a baptismal reception, Kanang was
asked to dance, and she improvised her dance steps to
mimic the way of the duck walks, wade in water, and
splash water on its back to attract a mate.
