 Stands up to 2000 times greater load than its own

weight.
 Created by SAMUEL STEPHENS KISTLER.
Aerogel is nanotechnology
• A nanometer is
1 billionth of a meter.

• A hair is 80,000
nm wide.

• Aerogel is a glass
foam with bubbles
10 nm wide.

WHAT IS AEROGEL?
An aerogel is solid with air pockets
dispersed throughout. Aerogels
are essentially the solid
framework of a gel.

 A class of porous, solid materials

that exhibit extreme material
properties.
Why is aerogel blue?
• The sky, glaciers and
aerogel all have tiny
particles or bubbles
that scatter light.

• Blue scatters the most,

so they all look blue.
TYPES OF AEROGEL
 Silica
Silica aerogel is the most common type of aerogel. The most

extensively studied and used it.

It is silica-based and can be derived from silica gel.

Silica aerogel held entries in GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS for

material properties, including best insulator & lowest density solid.

 Carbon
• Carbon aerogels are composed of particles with sizes in the
nanometre range, covalently bonded together.
•They have very high porosity(over 50%, with diameter under100
• nm). Surface areas ranging between 400 to 1000 m²/g.
SYNTHESIS OF AEROGEL

PROCESSING”

 Mixing of chemicals

 Gelation
 Drying

 Final product
Strength under pressure

• Mix alcohol and silicon

together

• Under high pressure

and temperature,
replace liquid with gas

PROPERTIES
 lightest

 Flexibility

 Low density

 High strength.

 Variable refractive index

 Low thermal
conductivity.
Aerogel is strong
• Aerogel is super
strong for its weight.

• A 2.5 kg brick
supported on top of
a piece of aerogel
weighing only 2
grams – over 1000
times lighter!

ADVANTAGES
 Flexibility

 Waterproof

 High Resistance

 Aerogel is more expensive, but

definitely the best overall type of
insulation.
DISADVANTAGES

 Health issues.

 High production costs.

 Requires more chemicals and

usually more time.
APPLICATION
 Thermal
insulation
 Electronic
components.
 Foundry
technology.
 Architecture.

 Pharmacy.
 Space
 Sports wear
What is aerogel good for?

• Tiny bubbles make

amazing insulators

• 40 times better
than fiberglass

Aerogel is light

• NASA uses aerogel

because it’s really
lightweight.

• Cheaper to fly
into space

• Used on the NASA photo

Stardust probe
CONCLUSION

 Global market - 2011 $951 million, 2015 to

2020 $1598.6 million.
 Very low thermal conductivity.

 Melting temperature 1200°C.

 Lightest and low density.

• So it can be said that Aerogels have certainly surprised us in many
aspects and it has gradually begun to fulfil a number of
expectations, certainly for a material that is destined to become
one of the most important materials of the 21st century
