What is advent?
The arrival of a notable person,
thing or event.
Is a season observed in many
Christian churches as a time of
expectant waiting and
preparation for both the
celebration of the Nativity of
Jesus at Christmas and the
return of Jesus at the Second
Coming. The term is a version of
the Latin word meaning
"Coming"
The Latin word adventus is the translation of the Greek word Parousia,
commonly used to refer to the Second Coming of Christ.
The season of advent anticipates the coming of Christ from 3 different
perspective.
:in the flesh in bethlehem, in our hearts daily, and in glory at the end of
time.
History
It is known when the period of preparation for
Christmas that is now called Advent first- began
It was certainly in existence from about 480-
introduced by the Council of Tours of 567 was to
order monks to fast everyday in the month of
december until christmas
According to Saint Gregory of tours the
celebration of advent began in the fifth century
when the bishop Perpetuus directed that
starting with the feast of St. Martin, 11
november until christmas, one fast three times
per week. This is why advent is also named Lent
of St. Martin.
Advent wreath
The concept of the Advent wreath is
originated among german Lutherans in the
16th century. However, it wasnot until three
centuries later that the modern advent
wreath took shape.
The modern advent wreath representing the
sundays of advent, originated from an 1839
initiative by Johann Hinrich Wichern, a
protestan pastor in germany and a pioneer
in urban mission work among the poor.
The wreath- made of various evergreens, (continous
life)
The circle- which has no beggining or end (eternity of
God, the immortality of the soul, and rhe everlasting
life we find in Christ.)
The four Candles- represents the four weeks of advent,
and one candle is lit each Sunday
Three of the candles are purple because the color
violet is a liturgical color that signifies a time of prayer,
penance, and sacrifice.
The first candle (purple)
symbolizes hope. It
sometimes called the
"Prophecy Candle" In
remembrance of the
Prophets, especially Isaiah,
who foretold the birth of
christ.
The second candle, also
purple represents faith. It
is caleed the "Bethlehem
Candle" as a reminder of
Mary and Joseph's journey
to Bethlehem.
The third candle is pink and
symobolizes Joy. It is called the
"Shepard's Candle".
and is pink because rose is a
liturgical color for joy. The third
sunday is Gaudete Sunday and
is meant to remind us of the joy
that the world experienced at
the birth of Jesus.
On the fourth week of advent,
we light the final purple candle
to mark the final week of
prayer and penance as we wait
for the birth of our savior.
"Angel's Candle" symbolizes
peace. It reminds us of the
message of the angels: "Peace
on Earth, God will Toward Men"
The white candle is placed
in the middle of the
wreath and lit on christmas
Eve. "Christ Candle"
