DISTRIBUTION

OF WATER ON
EARTH
WHAT IS THE DISTRIBUTION
OF WATER ON EARTH?

The distribution of water on the Earth's surface is extremely uneven. Only 3%

of water on the surface is fresh; the remaining 97% resides in the ocean. Of
freshwater, 69% resides in glaciers, 30% underground, and less than 1% is
located in lakes, rivers, and swamps.

SALTWATER

Salt water , is a geological term that refers to naturally occurring

solutions containing large concentrations of dissolved, inorganic
ions. ... Other natural waters can also be salty, sometimes
containing much larger concentrations of salt than the oceans
FRESHWATER

Fresh water is any naturally occurring water except seawater

and brackish water. Fresh water includes water in ice sheets, ice
caps, glaciers, icebergs, bogs, ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, and
even underground water called groundwater.

ICECAPS AND GLACIERS

An ice cap is a glacier, a thick layer of ice and snow, that covers
fewer than 50,000 square kilometers (19,000 square
miles). Glacial ice covering more than 50,000 square kilometers
(19,000 square miles) is called an ice sheet. An interconnected
series of ice caps and glaciers is called an ice field.
GROUND WATER

Groundwater is the water found underground in the cracks and

spaces in soil, sand and rock. It is stored in and moves slowly
through geologic formations of soil, sand and rocks called
aquifers.
SURFACE WATER

Surface water is water on the surface of continents such as in a

river, lake, or wetland. It can be contrasted with groundwater and
atmospheric water. Non-salinesurface water uses is replenished
by precipitation and by recruitment from ground-water.

SURFACE WATER

River
A river is a natural flowing watercourse, usually freshwater,
flowing towards an ocean, sea, lake or another river. In some
cases a river flows into the ground and becomes dry at the end
of its course without reaching another body of water.
SURFACE WATER

Swamps
An area of low-lying land that is frequently flooded,
especially one dominated by woody plants. b. A
lowland region saturated with water. 2. A situation or
place fraught with difficulties and imponderables
SURFACE WATER

Lake
Lakes are large bodies of water that are surrounded by land and
are not part of an ocean. Lakes are relatively still bodies of
water when compared to a river where the water flows. They can
contain either salt or fresh water and are larger than ponds.
