Dana Classification

of Minerals
Report of Jean Novelo and
Abegail Rapada
James Dwight Dana

American Geologist

Mineralogist

Zoologist
Dana's System divides minerals
into eight basic classes. The classes
are native elements,silicates,
oxides, sulfides, sulfates, halides,
carbonates, phosphates, and
mineraloids.
CLASSIFICATION OF EXAMPLE DESCRIPTION
MINERALS

Native Elements These minerals are

naturally occuring in nature
in an uncombined form
with a distinct mineral
structure.

Silver

Silicates This is the largest group of

minerals.

Feldspar
Oxides It is form from the
combination of a metal
with oxygen.

Magnetite

Sulfides These are made of

compounds of sulfur
usually with a metal.

Pyrite
Sulfates These are made of
compounds of sulfur
combined with metals and
oxygen.

Gypsum

Halides They are from halogen

elements combined with
metalic elements.

Halite/ table salt

Carbonates These are group of
minerals made of carbon,
oxygen and metallic
element.

Dolomite

Phosphates They are often formed

when other minerals are
broken down by
weathering.

Apatite
Mineraloid It is the term for those
substances that do not fit
neat into one of these 8
classes.
