Direct Speech

• In direct speech is saying what someone said


without any change. Here, we use quotation
mark (“ ”) to indicate what the person said and
also use the exact words of the person.
Example of Direct Speech

Pinky said, “ I like to play games on the computer. ”

Indirect Speech
In indirect speech we do not use
quotation mark. Instead we use the
conjunction ‘that’ and state the sentence
by changing its tense
Example of Indirect Speech

Indirect: She said that she worked in a hospital.

Direct: David said, “I am not going to college”.


Indirect: David said that he was not going to college.
• Present Perfect Past Perfect
(has/have + PPV had + PPV)

Direct: John said, “I have won a prize”.


Indirect: John said that he had won a prize.
• Simple Past Past Perfect
(went had+gone)

Direct: They said, “ We went to the market”.


Indirect: They said that they had gone to the market.
• Past Perfect Past Perfect
(had + PPV had + PPV)

Direct: David said, “I had passed the exam”.


Indirect: David said that he had passed the exam.
• Simple Future

(will go would go)

Direct: She said, “I will go to London”.


Indirect: She said that she would go to London.
Future Continuous
(will +be +verb +ing would +be +verb +ing)

Direct: She said, “I will be feeding my kids”.


Indirect: She said that she would be feeding her kids.
