The Ridge-to-Reef or the Integrated

Ecosystems Approach to
Environmental Management
What is RIDGE-TO-REEF (R2R)?
Linking interactions from mountains, uplands to
rivers, coastline, lagoon and reef.
What is Ecosystem Approach?
 is a strategy for the integrated management of
land, water and living resources that promotes
conservation and sustainable use in an equitable way.

Integrated Coastal Management (ICM)
Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM)
Integrated River Basin Management
Ecosystem-Based Management
Used for projects that incorporate interaction on
different levels: organisms, the ecosystem, and the
human component.

Considers social and cultural aspects into the solution

not just only scientific reasoning.
Ecosystem Management
Process is similar to EBM; however, socioeconomics

Cultural aspect is also considered when creating

solution
Features of Ridge to Reef (R2R) Approach
Maintain and preserve ecosystem

Improve climate resilience
Address pollutant threats
Livelihood
