HOW TO IMPLEMENT FEMALE
PERINEAL CARE
1. Prepare and bring equipment and supplies to the bedside
2. Explain to the client what you are going to do, why it is necessary, and how she can
cooperate
3. Wash hands and observe the proper infection control procedures
4. Draw the curtains around the bed to provide privacy
5. Prepare, position, and drape the client
• Cover the body and legs with a bath blanket
• Position client in a supine position with the knees flexed and spread apart
• Place bedpan and rubber sheet under client’s hips
• Drape the legs to avoid unnecessary exposure
6. Inspect perineal area, note any inflammation, excoriation or swelling
7. Wash and dry perineal area
• Pick a cotton sponge with forceps and wash the upper aspect of the labia
majora and towards the mons veneris (use one cotton ball per stroke and
discard into kidney basin)
• Stretch the labia between the labia majora and the labia minora to wash the
folds
• For one downward stroke, a cotton ball in soap solution is used to wash over
the vulva directly down the middle towards the anus. Dispose of each after
stroke
• Wash the groin towards the upper third of the thigh, start from the crease of
the groin up to the thigh, do the same on the other thigh
• Wash soapy area with solution or warm water
• Dry perineum thoroughly with dry cotton balls using the same stroke when
cleansing
• The mons veneris and thighs may be dried with toilet paper
8. Remove the bedpan and dry buttocks with toilet paper
9. For post-delivery and menstruating women, apply a perineal pad as needed
10. Replace bath blanket with top sheet and position client comfortably
11. Dispose equipment
12. Perform hand hygeine

1. Explain to the client what you are going to do, why is it important and how he can
help
2. Wash hands and follow other appropriate procedures to control infection
3. Provide privacy to the client
4. Prepare, position and drape the client
5. Clean the top inner thighs
6. Inspect perineal area
7. Use firm strokes to wash and dry the penis. Using firm motions prevent penis from
erecting
8. Retract prepuse to expose the glans penis if the client is uncircumcised upon
cleaning. Replace skin afterwards
9. Wash and dry the scrotum. Wash the urethral meatus of the tip of the penis first.
Use circular motion, clean from the meatus outward. Replace washcloth with new
one and repeat until penis is clean
10. Return foreskin to natural position
11. Assist client to turn onto the side facing away from you, then start cleaning between
buttocks
12. Focus on the anal area and the posterior folds on the scrotum. Use toilet tissue to
clean anus before washing if necessary
13. Dry the area
14. Replace bed linens and reposition the client
15. Dispose waste and soiled equipment
16. Perform hand hygeine
