Introduction
• Higher Education in India has evolved in distinct and divergent streams
with each stream monitored by an apex body, indirectly controlled by the
Ministry of Human Resource Development. The 415 universities/
institutions, are mostly funded by the state governments. However, there
are 25 important universities called Central universities, which are
maintained by the Union Government and because of relatively large
funding, they have an edge over the others. The engineering education
and business schools are monitored and accredited by the All India
Council for Technical Education (AICTE) while medical education is
monitored and accredited by the Medical Council of India (MCI). Like-
wise, agriculture education and research is monitored by the Indian
Council for Agriculture Research. The country has some ace engineering,
management and medical education institutions which are directly
funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Union
Government. Admission to all professional education colleges is done
through All-India common admission tests of which the IIT-JEE, AIEEE, CAT
and CPMT are the most popular ones.

DESTINATION INDIA
• India is expected to become the Education hub of the world with 20 new IITs and IIMs, and
the setting up of numerous new private universities. This will attract students seeking
quality Higher education to the country.
• However, apart from knowing India well, some other advantages are attracting students to
study in India. Some of them are:
• Low Cost: The cost of education in India is quite low as compared to many other countries
of the world.
• Quality Education: Quality of education is not uniform throughout the length and breath of
the country. However, there are some educational institutes in India that provide world
class education. Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institutes of Management, Indian
Institutes of Science, National Law Schools, Jawaharlal Nehru University Delhi University
are some such Institutes. The government of India is also speeding up the efforts to
establish more such institutes that can offer quality education in India. and
• Financial Assistance: Various scholarships, education loans and other financial aids are
now available for studying in India.
• Consultation Service: The government of India provides consultation service to the
interested international students through Education Consultants of India (Ed.CIL). Thus,
one can get all the information about the Indian education system, cost of education,
duration, visa, accommodation facilities even before landing up in India.

India. The seven functioning Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), established
over different periods, have emerged as great teaching institutions and their
products are in high demand in India and abroad. They were created by the
Indian Government with the aim of identifying the brightest intellectual talent
available in the student community of India and training it in the best management
techniques available in the world, to ultimately create a pool of elite managers to
