School Life At Ateneo And


The University Of Santo
Tomas
Letran vs Ateneo
 Ateneo de Manila – a college under the supervision
of Spanish Jesuits. Formerly the Escuela Pia
(Charity School), an educational institution
established by the City government in 1917 for
poor boys in Manila. It became Ateneo
Municipal and later on Ateneo de Manila, when
the Jesuits returned to the Philippines in 1768.
 College of San Juan de Letran – it was owned by the
Dominicans and rival school of Ateneo de
Manila.
Rizal’s First Day In Ateneo
SY 1871-1872 - school opened in June. Rizal, just
like any other neophytes in a new environment full of
excitement and joy. He was dressed like the others
with coat and tie.

My First Inspiration
This poem was written by Rizal in Ateneo as an
expression of good wishes which was full of
endearing filial affection on his mother’s birthday.
The translation from Spanish to English was by Leon
Ma. Guerrero, Jr.
Being brilliant student, Rizal obtained excellent
grades and received many prizes offered by the
school. He was very active in co-curricular activities,
Don Agustin Saez – teacher of Rizal in solfegio
and in drawings and paintings
Rizal’s Poem In Education
Rizal wrote this poem when he was only 15 yrs old. At
an early age, he was already aware of the value of
education and its significant role in the intellectual,
physical and moral development of an individual in
particular and the progress and welfare of a nation in
general.
The translation of the poem from Spanish to English
was by Dr. Frank C. Laubach
Father Francisco Sanchez – one of Rizal’s professor
who inspired him to study with seal and enthusiasm and
write poetry.
A La Juventud Filipina
 To The Filipino Youth – was written by Rizal when he was
18 yrs old at the UST in connection with literary contest
sponsored by Liceo Artistico Literario, a society of men
interested in literature and arts. He won first prize.
This prize-winning poem is an open and explicit
expression of love of country. Rizal appealed to the
youth to rise from apathy and enjoined them to create
beautiful verses with art and science.

Artistic Skill In Sculpture

Young Rizal impressed his professors and


classmates when he curved the image of the
Virgin Mary on a piece of Philippine hardwood –
batikuling with a pocket-knife.
 Father Leonard – an old Jesuit priest requested
Rizal to curve for him the image of the Sacred
Heart of Jesus,
Education Under The Jesuits
The students were trained by rigid discipline and
character development
Religious instruction was given emphasis to acquire the
manners and morals of Christian gentlemen.
Prizes were given for outstanding and impeccable
department. Penalties were meted out for disorderly
conduct.
The government subsidized the school from the
municipal treasury.
The curriculum includes Christian doctrine, Spanish,
Latin, Greek and French; world geography and history,
including Spain and Philippines.
Medical Studies At Sto.
Tomas
UST - the oldest university in the Philippines
June 1877 – Rizal enrolled his first course of
Philosophy, simulataneously he studied in Ateneo for
the diploma in surveying.
1878-1879 – Jose begun his medical studies, he
wanted to be physician so that he could look after his
mother’s failing eyesight.
Father Pablo Ramon – Rector of Ateneo, whom
Rizal consulted for advice on the choice of career.

Dominican professors seemed hostile to Rizal


The methods of instruction were traditional and
in some cases repressive.
 El Filibusterismo – his novel, Rizal described how
some Dominican professors insulted Filipino
students and mockingly called the “Indio”.
Rizal’s First Love

 Segundiwa Katigbak – a 14 yr old girl who was a


boarder at La Concordia College, where Rizal’s
elder sister were studying,
 Leonor Rivera – in 1880, he met her while boarding
in the home of his uncle, Antonio Rivera. They
became sweethearts for 11 yrs.
The Council Of The Gods
 El Consejo delos Dioses – an allegory in prose, Rizal
joined in another literary contest sponsored by the
Liceo Artistico-Literario.
 Miguel de Cervantes – a noted Spanish novelist and
famous author of Don Quixote.
This winning allegory-literary masterpiece of Rizal
based on classics which has a figurative treatment of
one subject under the guise of another was a result of
the kind assistance of Rector of Ateneo who provided
the needed reference materials.
