Instrument Landing System

Instrument Landing System (ILS) is a precision runway approach aid that provides both vertical and horizontal guidance to pilots during landing using radio signals. It has basic components including a localizer that provides lateral guidance along the runway centerline, a glide path that provides vertical descent guidance, and markers that help pilots identify their position during approach. Additional components are approach lighting systems, DME for distance measurements, and visual aids to help with landing when visibility is low. ILS indicators in the cockpit display deviations from the optimal glide path and centerline to help pilots maintain proper alignment during landing.

-[ OVERVIEW ]-

Instrument Landing System (ILS) is defined as

a precision runway approach aid based on two
radio beams which together provide pilots with
both vertical and horizontal guidance during an
approach to land.

An Instrument Landing System (ILS) is a radio

beam transmitter that provides a direction for
approaching aircraft that tune their receiver to the
ILS frequency.

It uses a combination of radio signals, to enable a

safe landing during instrument meteorological
