Solving Quadratic Function

Ways to solve quadratic Function:

1. Factoring
2.Completing
3. Quadratic Formula
Solving Quadratic Equations by
“FACTORING”

Factoring – is the reverse process of

multiplication
Example:
Multiplication Factoring
4 x 5 = 20 20 10 2
10 x 2 = 20 1 20 4 5
1 x 20 = 20
Solving Quadratic Equations by
“FACTORING”
Steps in solving Quadratic Equations by
factoring:
1. Transform quadratic function y = ax2 +
bx + c to quadratic equation ax2 + bx +
c=0
2. Factor quadratic expression
3. Set each factor equal to zero (0)
4. Solve each resulting equation
1. Factoring using GCF:
 Hint:
 two terms and the coefficients are not a
perfect square.
 Compose of quadratic term and linear
To factor:
 Find the GCF
 Divide each terms to the GCF
 Follow the steps in solving by factoring
- Example:
2
1. Factoring using GCF:

3x2 + 12x = 0
GCF: 3x
Factors: 3x (x + 4) = 0
Equate each factors to zero:
3x = 0 and x+4=0

SOLUTION: 0 or - 4
2. Factoring a perfect square binomial:

Hint:
 Two terms with minus sign
 First and second terms are perfect
square
 Compose of a quadratic term and
the constant
How to factor perfect square binomial?

 Get the square root of the first term

 Get the square root of the last term
 The resulting factors are two
binomials
Example:
Solve x2 – 25 = 0
Factors:
(x – 5) (x + 5) = 0

x–5=0 x+5=0
x=5 x=-5
3. Factoring trinomial where a = 1
Steps:
1. Write in standard form
2. Factor the quadratic term
3. Factor the constant
4. The sum of the factors of constant
is equal to b.
Example:
Solve x2 – 5x + 6 = 0
Factors:
Quadratic term: x and x
Constant: -3 and – 2

(x – 3) (x – 2) = 0

x – 3 = 0x - 2 = 0

x=3 x=2
Try to answer!
1.2x2 + 6x = 0
GCF: 2x
Factors:
2x(x + 3) = 0

2x = 0x + 3 = 0

=
x=-3

x=0

Try to answer!
2. x2 - 9 = 0
Factors:
(x + 3) (x – 3) = 0

x + 3= 0 x - 3 = 0
x = - 3x = 3
Try to answer!
3. x2 + 7x + 12= 0
Factors:
(x + 3) (x + 4) = 0

x + 3= 0 x + 4 = 0
x = - 3x = - 4
Try to answer!
4. x2 - 7x = 0
GCF: x
Factors:
x(x – 7) = 0
x=0 x-7=0
x=7
Try to answer!
3. x2 + 7x + 12= 0
Factors:
(x + 3) (x + 4) = 0

x + 3= 0 x + 4 = 0
x = - 3x = - 4
ASSESSMENT

Solve the following by Factoring:

1. 3x2 + 15x = 0
2. x2 – 49 = 0
3. x2 + 4x + 3 = 0
4. x2 + 7x – 30 = 0
4.
  Factoring trinomial where a 1

Steps:
1. Write in standard form
2. Find ac
3. Factor ac
4. The sum of the factors of ac is equal
to b.
5. Write the resulting factors
Example

Example: 2x2 - 7x + 6 = 0
ac = 12
Factors of ac: -3 and -4
Bring down:
2x2 – 3x -4x + 6 = 0 – then group the terms into two
(2x2 – 3x) + (- 4x + 6) = 0- get the GCF of each group
x(2x – 3) – 2(2x – 3) = 0
Factors:
(2x - 3)(x - 2) = 0
2x - 3= 0
x-2=0
2x = 3

x= x=2

2. 6x2 + 5x - 4 = 0
ac = - 24
Factors of ac: 8 and -3
Bring down:
6x2 + 8x -3x - 4 = 0 – then group the terms into two
(6x2 + 8x) + (- 3x - 4) = 0- get the GCF of each group
2x(3x + 4) – (3x + 4) = 0
Factors:
(2x - 1)(3x + 4) = 0
2x - 1= 0 3x + 4 = 0
2x = 1 3x = - 4

= =

x= x==

3. 4x2 + 7x + 3 = 0
ac = 12
Factors of ac: 3 and 4
Bring down:
4x2 + 3x + 4x + 3 = 0 – then group the terms into two
(4x2 + 3x) + (4x + 3) = 0- get the GCF of each group
x(4x + 3) + (4x + 3) = 0
Factors:
(x + 1)(4x + 3) = 0
x + 1= 04x + 3 = 0

x = -1 4x = - 3

x==

How to factor a perfect square
trinomial?

Steps:
1. Write in standard form
2. Get the square root of the first and
last terms
3. The resulting factor is the square of
a binomial
Example: x2 + 12x + 36 = 0
Square root of x2:x
Square root of 36: 6
Factors:
(x + 6) (x + 6) = 0
(x + 6)2 = 0

x + 6=
x + 6= 0

x=-6

2. r2 - 18r + 81 = 0

Square root of r2:r

Square root of 81: 9
Factors:
(x - 9) (x - 9) = 0
(x - 9)2 = 0
x - 9=
x - 9= 0

x= 9

Assessment: Summative Test

Factor then solve:

1. 2x2 + 10x = 0

2. x2 - 16 = 0
3. 4x2 – 12x + 9 = 0
