IFE Transport SIG
The objectives of the SIGs are to:
• Raise and promote standards within
the fire engineering industry.
• Provide additional member benefits in
terms of specialist information and to
share good practice.
• By providing additional member
benefits, generate new membership of IFE.
IFE Transport SIG
• The Transport SIG reports though TSAG
• TSAGs Chairman sit on the IFE Board and
reports on the work and actions of SIGs
• The minutes of the Transport SIG are
circulated to TSAG and the IFE head
office
• Issues and work that could effect the IFE
are agreed prior to publications or issue
IFE Transport SIG
• The Transport SIG has published a paper on
external glazing
• Assisted London Underground with a peer
review of its guidance on the use of glazing
• Assist members with fire issues effecting them
• We also present documents and presentations
to each other, Robin Hall recently talked about
fire safety in road tunnels

Tunnel Works Safety

The components of safe work underground

•Capability of staff
•Assessment & control of risks
•Air quality
•Safety equipment
•Emergency planning
Capability of Individuals

• Induction for all site personnel

• All to hold appropriate CSCS / CPCS card
• Operatives working on station - LUCAS / Sentinel card
• Additional Inductions:
– Tunnel operatives / visitors to tunnels
– Mobile plant
– Crane Team
• Visitors induction & be escorted at all times
Tunnel Induction
Gas and fire detection have different alarms
Important to recognise which is which

Assessment & Control
of Risk

• Risk Register
• Construction Phase Plan (HASEMP)
• Fire Risk Assessment
• Fire & Emergency Strategy
• Emergency Plan
• Daily Review Meeting (DRM)
• Work activity risk assessment & method statements
Control of Entry

Permit to enter is completed.

A tally board system is used:

• Account for all operatives in tunnel
• Ensure maximum number in tunnels is not exceeded
• Visitors have their own area on the Tally board
Compressed Gas
Acetylene is not used on site

Propane & oxygen used

Compressed gases are part of the tally system

Limits the amount of compressed gas in the

tunnels

Clear identification that Compressed

gas is in the tunnels

Safety Equipment
Fire Trace
All mobile plant fitted with automatic
fire suppression.

Includes mobile plant in crane shed

The extinguishant is sprayed directly at

the source of the heat.

Safety Equipment

Portable fire fighting

equipment

First aid equipment & AED

Safety Equipment
Minimising Fire Smoke
All electrical equipment has correct IP rating and
insulation has low smoke zero halogen content.
Evacuation

The tunnel areas are confusing places and

clear boards showing where you are in relation
to your safe exits are essential.
Evacuation
The number of workers and visitors are limited by
the time required to escape safely, air supply
provided by the MSA devices and capacity of the
lifts.
