Chain pr1

The document discusses chain drives, including their components, advantages, limitations, applications, classifications, and lubrication. Chain drives use a series of linked plates or rollers to transmit power between two rotating shafts. They provide constant velocity, high efficiency, and can transmit power over short or long distances. Common types include block chains, bush roller chains, and inverted tooth chains. Chain drives are used in various machinery applications like vehicles, conveyors, and industrial equipment. Proper lubrication is important for performance and lifespan.

INTRODUCTION CHAIN DRIVES

CHAIN AND SPROCKET

 A chain is a power transmission element made as a series
of pin‐connected links.
 A sprocket is a toothed wheel upon which a chain rides.
 Load is applied by the driving sprocket on the
chain, the load is transmitted to a bushing, pin,
and pair of link plates, pins and link plates push the
driven sprocket to
Chain Drives
Chain Drives
Chain Drives ‐ Advantages
 Due to no slippage, constant velocity is obtained.
 Less width is occupied, due to metal strength.
 Can be used for short as well as long center distances.
 High transmission efficiency (97‐99%).
 One chain can transfer power to multiple shafts.
 Can be operated at high temperature.
 Permits high speed ratio of 8 to 10.
 Multiple reduction stages are made, for high
reduction ratio.
 Good service life
 Easy to install and repair
Chain Drives ‐ Limitations

 Installation and component cost is higher

 Require maintenance and lubrication
 Velocity fluctuation occurs, when mounted
inaccurately
 Noisy
APPLICATION OF CHAIN DRIVE:
 Use in vehicles
 Automobiles
 Transmitting power to the wheels
 Chain pump
 Bicycles
 Inside motors
 Motorcycles
 Conveyers
 Agricultural machinery
 Oil-well drilling machines
 Machine tools
Chain ‐ Classification
• These chains are used for transmission of
power, when the distance between the
centers of shafts is short. These chains have
provision for efficient lubrication.
• The power transmitting chains are of the
following three types….
– Block chain
– Bush roller chain
– Inverted tooth or silent chain.
Block chain
 A block chain, as shown in Fig11.31. is also
known as bush chain.
 This type of chain was used in the early stages of
development in the power transmission.
 It produces noise when approaching or leaving
the teeth of the sprocket because of rubbing
between the teeth and the links.
 Such type of chains are used to some extent as
conveyor chain at small speed.
Bush roller chain
 A bush roller chain, as shown in Fig. 11.32, consists of
outer plates or pin link plates, inner plates or roller link
plates, pins, bushes and rollers.
 A pin passes through the bush which is secured in the
holes of the roller between the two sides of the chain.
 The rollers are free to rotate on the bush which protect
the sprocket wheel teeth against wear.
 A bush roller chain is extremely strong and simple in
construction.
 It gives good service under severe conditions.
 There is a little noise with this chain which is due to
impact of the rollers on the sprocket wheel teeth.
 This chain may be used where there is a little
lubrication.
 The rollers then fit unequally into the cavities
of the wheel.
 The result is that the total load falls on one
teeth or on a few teeth.
CHAIN CLASSIFICATION BASIS OF
CONSTRUCTION
1.Roller Chains
 Rotate on the teeth of a sprocket
 It is mostly used to transmit power

2. Roller less Chains

 No roller links
 Used on lifts and hoists
3.Silent Chains
 Sometimes called inverted tooth chain
 Used at speeds and loads higher than roller chains
 Sprocket, teeth different shape, grove in the middle
Inverted tooth or silent chain
• An inverted tooth or silent chain is shown in
Fig. 11.33. It is designed to eliminate the evil
effects caused by stretching and to produce
noiseless running.
• When the chain stretches and the pitch of the
chain increases, the links ride on the teeth of
the sprocket wheel at a slightly increased
radius.
• This automatically corrects the small change in
the pitch.
• There is no relative sliding between the teeth
of the inverted tooth chain and the sprocket
wheel teeth.
• When properly lubricated, this chain gives
durable service and runs very smoothly and
quietly.

Chain Drives – Roller chains
• Pitch Is the distance between the centers of two
adjacent pins.
• Pitch circle radius (rc) Distance between the pin
center and the center of sprocket, when the hinge is
meshed with that sprocket.

Chain Drives – Lubrication
• The performance of chain assembly is improved by
proper lubrication. It reduces the friction and act as a
coolant.
• Improper lubrication produces premature chain failure.
• Lubrication types depend upon the speed and
environment.
• Manual lubrication : Lube is applied periodically
using brush or oil can. e.g. bike chain.
• Drip lubrication : oil drips with sufficient flow is
directed on the chain. e.g. Conveyor chains, engine.
