FILE INTEGRITY

&
SECURITY
WHAT DOES FILE INTEGRITY MEAN?

 File integrity in IT refers to the process of protecting a

file from unauthorized changes, including cyber-attacks.
In other words, a file’s 'integrity’ is validated to
determine whether or not it has been altered after its
creation, curation, archiving or other qualifying event.
UNIT AT GLANCE
 The safety and integrity of files can be ensured in the
following ways:
 Using passwords to ensure confidentiality of files.
 Applying read-only access and overwrite protection.
 Restricting access
 Virus protection and encryption.
 Disaster recovery strategies
 Fireproof and waterproof cabinets.
WRITE PROTECTING A FILE
 Sometimes you may want to ensure that people
do not change a file to which they have access.
 For example, you may design a company’s
employment application form using Microsoft
word.
WHAT IS PASSWORD PROTECTION
 Password protection is a security process that protects
information accessible via computers that needs to
be protected from certain users. Password
protection allows only those with an
authorized password to gain access to certain
information.
WHAT IS ANTIVIRUS AND ENCRYPTION
 An antivirus with encryption helps you protect
your data and privacy of your files, ensuring that
malicious users or your household members
can't access them
WHAT IS THE FIREWALLS
 A firewall is a system designed to prevent unauthorized
access to or from a private network. You can implement
a firewall in either hardware or software form, or a
combination of both.
WHAT IS THE USING BACKUP
 The backup utility helps you create a copy of the
information on your hard disk. If the original data on
your hard disk is lost or damaged, you can use the copy
to restore the information on the hard disk.
WHAT IS ERROR CHECKING
The Error checking tool to check for file system error and
bad sector on your hard disk.
 Open my computer, and then select the hard disk you
want to check.
 On the file menu, click Properties.

 On the tool tab, under Error- checking, click check

now…
 Under check disk options, select the scan for and attempt
recovery of bad sectors check box.
USING THE DISK DEFRAGMENTER
 Microsoft Drive Optimizer (formerly Disk
Defragmenter) is a utility in Microsoft Windows
designed to increase data access speed by rearranging
files stored on a disk to occupy contiguous storage
locations, a technique called defragmentation.
WHAT IS FILE RETENTION
 Document retention is a system that allows you and
your employees to automatically create policies and
determine what should be done with particular
documents or records at a certain point of time.
Have files automatically moved to a new folder, system,
directory, or site.
WHAT IS THE ARCHIVING
 Archiving is the process of relocating records from the
active filing area to storage.
 For e.g. disks containing scanned documents that are no
longer in use can be stored in an archive.
WHAT IS DISPOSAL OF FILES
 Records disposal is the process by which University
Records are either destroyed or retained as University
Archives. Disposal is a range of processes associated
with implementing the records retention, destruction or
transfer decisions documented in the University's
Records Retention and Disposal Authority
