Nursing in the Philippines
Global and National Health Situation
• The Philippines has made significant
investments and advances in health in recent
years.
• Rapid economic growth and strong country
capacity have contributed to Filipinos living
longer and healthier.
• However, all the benefits of this growth have
not reached the most vulnerable groups, and
the health system remains fragmented.
• The country has played a critical role in
shaping development agendas, including the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
• In the spirit of the SDGs, this country

cooperation strategy focuses on leaving no
one behind and enhancing collaboration for
health to move the Philippines closer to
universal health coverage
• The work of WHO and the Department of
Health will focus on five strategic priorities:
saving lives
• promoting well-being
• protecting health
• optimizing the health architecture
• using platforms for health
What is a community?
• -a group of people with common

characteristics or interests living together
within a territory or geographical boundary
• -place where people under usual conditions

are found

Different definitions of health : according to

HEALTH AND ILLNESS CONTINUUM
The health-illness continuum 
• this process of change, in which the
individual experiences various
states of health and illness (ranging
from extremely good health to
death) that fluctuate throughout
his life.
Example:
• Two students just found out about a big test
tomorrow, for which they are completely unprepared.
One student responds to this stressful situation
(stressor) by going home, getting his books out, and
starting to study. The other student breaks out into a
sweat, and spends most of the evening fretting over
this outrage and imagining what will happen to him if
he doesn’t pass the test. No doubt, this student is
doing more damage to his health than is his friend.
And, considering the time and energy he is expending
on worrying (and not studying), he may experience
even more stress when they receive their grades!
Agent-Host Environment Model
• Epidemiologic triad or triangle
• The triad consists of an
external agent, a
susceptible host, and
an environment that brings the
host and agent together.
• Disease results from the
interaction between the agent
and the susceptible host in an
environment that supports the
transmission of the agent from
a source to that host.
Health Belief Model
• The HBM suggests that a
person's belief in a personal
threat of an illness or disease
together with a person's belief
in the effectiveness of the
recommended health behavior
or action will predict the
likelihood the person will adopt
the behavior.
Evolutionary based Model
• This model is based on the
principle that illness and death
sometimes serve an
evolutionary function by
maximizing natural selection
prospects of other group
members.
Health Promotional Model
• It defines health as a positive
dynamic state rather than simply
the absence of disease.
• Health promotion is directed at

increasing a patient's level of well-
being.
-focusing on the major determinants of

health (physical. social, spiritual
,psychological and etc.)

According to Dr. C.E. Winslow, Public Health is a science & art of 3 P’s

• Promotion of health and efficiency through
organized community effort
WHO define PHN
• The art of applying science in the context of
politics so as to reduce inequalities in health
while ensuring the BEST HEALTH FOR THE
GREATEST NUMBER
What is Community Health Nursing?
• the utilization of the nursing process in the

different levels of clientele-individuals, families,
population groups and communities, concerned
with the promotion of health, prevention of
disease and disability and rehabilitation.”

• COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING (CHN):
-a specialized field of nursing practice

-a science of Public Health combined with
Public Health Nursing Skills and Social
Assistance with the
GOAL :of raising the level of health of the
citizenry, to raise optimum level of functioning
of the citizenry (Characteristic of CHN)
ROLES OF THE PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE

• Clinician, who is a health care provider, taking care
of the sick people at home or in the RHU
• Health Educator, who aims towards health
promotion and illness prevention through
dissemination of correct information; educating
people
• Facilitator, who establishes multi-sectoral linkages
by referral system
• Supervisor, who monitors and supervises the
performance of midwives
• 5. Advocator- act on behalf of the client
• 6. Collaborator-working with other halth care

team member
• 7. Researcher
• 8. Manager
PRINCIPLES OF CHN
• 1. The community is the patient in CHN,the
family is the unit of care and there are 4
levels of clientele:
individual,family,population,group (those who
share common characteristics,developmental
stages and common exposure to problems-
e.g children,elderly) and the community.
• 2. In CHN,the client is considered as an active
partner NOT PASSIVE recipient
• 3. CHN practice is affected by developments in

health technology in particular,changes in
society in general
• 4. The goal of CHN is achieved thru

multisectoral effort
• 5. CHN is part of health care system and the
larger human services system
