RE goes in solution in Mg as they have favorable size factor and similar

electro negativity; Mg-1.20[Ce-1.21; Nd-1.19;Y-1.20] These increase strength

at elevated temperature.

In general, Mg-rich region shows peritectic or eutectic reaction

Mg forms three classes of intermetallic compounds
AB–> CsCl structure MgTl,MgAg, MgCe, SnMg where Mg can both be
electro positive or electronegative.
AB2 Laves phase; RA/RB=1.23 ; MgCu2  FCC Stcking : abcabc;
MgZn2HCP, abab; MgNi2  abacab
CaF2 structure FCC with group IV elements Mg2Si, Mg2Sn (Zintle phase);

AZ63 means Mg-6Al-3Zn

When solubility is decided by size factor, it decreases with temperature. This

makes the alloys age hardenable; but here it is to a lesser extent than Al-
alloys
In Mg alloys, precipitation process is complex and less understood
Sometimes, one stage becomes the formation of ordered hexagonal
precipitate with DO19 ordering (Mg3Cd) and coherent with matrix; it is thus
similar to GP2 (θ’’ ) in Al-Cu alloy: In Do19 ordering appt= 2aMg and
cppt=cMg
Precipitates forms on{1010} and {1120} along <0001> direction; alternate
planes of {1010} and {1120} in Mg3X consists of all the Mg atoms; hence a
low energy interface. This makes the structure stable; it will enhance creep
resistance.

Solid solution hardening takes place when solute like Zn is introduced

Grain Refinement
Super heat to 8500C /30 min; cool quickly normal cooling temperature &
power. Inclusion Al4C3 or AlN . Al4C3
Zr is a good refiner as it is HCP, & lattice parameter closer to Mg
AZ91: Mg- 9 Al -1 Zn
T5 aged- artificially aged after casting T6 solution quenched & artificial aged.
New alloy Mg – 8Al – 1Ca (AX81);AXE522 Mg – 5AL – 2Ca – 2RE
Mg-Zn alloy with Mg – 5.5 Zn alloy, GP Solvus is 70-800C
Natural age then age at 1500C ;refine size & dispersion of rods of
coherent MgZn2

This improve creep;

HK31, Mg-3.2 Th – 7Zr is used after T6 ageing

Similar to Mg – RE – Zr system

SSSS → β” → β’ → β (Mg23Th6)
Solid solution hardening is also important in age hardened situation; even in peak
aged condition for Mg-Al alloy 50% of Al atoms remain available for ss hardening
Discontinuous precipitation in Mg-Al alloy
Mg–Li system has attracted attention as a basis for very light-weight sheet and
plate ; have extensive solid solubility in magnesium. Moreover, only about 11%
lithium is needed to form a new -phase, which has a body-centred cubic (bcc)
structure, thereby offering the prospect of extensive cold-formability.
Solvus indicates may show agehardening.
LA141 (Mg–14Li–1Al), is weldable, has been used for armour plate
and for aerospace components
Elastic modulus does not show much variation in different directions of
hexagonal magnesium crystal, preferred orientation has relatively little effect
upon the modulus.

Twinning occurs when compressive stresses are parallel to the basal plane,
wrought magnesium alloys tend to show lower values of longitudinal proof
stress in compression

Wrought thorium-containing alloys such as HM21 (Mg–2Th–0.8Mn) are used for

manufacturing missile and spacecraft components which require creep resistance
at temperatures up to 350 °C.
ZK61 (Mg–6Zn–0.7Zr), is aged after extrusion, develops the highest room
temperature yield strength of the wrought magnesium alloys. It also offers the
advantage that tensile and compressive yield strengths are closely matched.
The highest strength recorded for a wrought magnesium alloy is for the
composition Mg–6Zn–1.2Mn (ZM61) in the form of heat-treated extruded bar.
The alloy shows a high response to age-hardening, and solution treatment at 420
°C, water quenched and duplex aged below and above the GP zones solvus (24 h
at 90 °C and 16 h at 180 °C)results in the following tensile properties: 0.1% P.S.
340 MPa; T.S. 385 Mpa with an elongation of 8%.
