Story of Easter
• When Jesus died, they placed his body
in a tomb which was cut into a rock.
The tomb was seald with a stone.
• Two days later Mary Magdalena and a
friend of Jesus visited the tomb. She
found the stone has been moved and
Jesus was gone!
• This is why Christians celebrate Easter.

Jesus was alive again!

Easter traditions in Hungary -
Watering

• In Hungary, and other territories

with Hungarian-speaking
communities, the day following
Easter is called „Watering
Monday”.
• Men usually visit families with
girls and women. First boys
recite a cute little poem to girls
and sprinkle with water or
perfume on the women and girls
of the house. Girls and women
gives in exchange an Easter eggs.
Painted Eggs

• Painted eggs are also part of the Easter traditions

in Hungary.
• Within the Christian tradition eggs were painted
red (to symbolize the blood of Jesus Christ),
however in recent centuries this has changed, we
paint or dye the eggs to many different colours and
decorate them with beautiful patterns.
• The flower motifs that are often incorporated in the
decoration reflect the embroidery and motifs that
you can see in Hungarian folk art.

Food blessing in the church
• Many Catholics attend food blessings at
church on Easter Sunday. The often
decorated baskets are made according to
custom with bread, salt, eggs, sausage
and an Easter lamb, wicker cakes.
• The church usually also consecrates
Easter eggs, which are later eaten. It is
an old tradition that every family
member receives one of these eggs,
whether or not they go to church. This
act demonstrates a respect for the
family.
Hungarian Easter food

• You will find Easter lamb, hard-

boiled eggs, various types of ham
and braided brioche at the center
of every Hungarian Easter dish.
• Since the Hungarians also like to
eat mustard and horseradish for
Easter, the delicious braided
brioche comes into play.
• Whether a tasty Gyula sausage or
good Hungarian mustard, it will be
sure to taste great combined with
the rest of the Easter dishes.
Easter superstitions
• The 40 day fast is the preparation for
purgation and salvation.
• The Holy Week, before the celebration,
starts with Palm Sunday, when Jesus
stepped across the gate of Jerusalem
according to the Bible.
• As tradition has it, it is prohibited to
work on Palm Sunday; however jollities
are permitted all the more.
• Planting flowers doesn’t count as work
and according to superstition, if you
sow seeds on Palm Sunday, your
flowers will be much more scented than
others’.
