What is Easter ?
• Easter is the oldest and the most
important Christian festival, the
celebration of the death and coming to
life again of Jesus Christ.
• The ester story includes Monday
Thursday (the last supper of Jesus), Good
Friday(the day on which Jesus was
crucified), and Ester day ( the day on
which Jesus come back to life)
When is Easter ?
• The date of Easter changes every
year. Easter Sunday can fall on
any date from 22March to
25April.
• Easter always falls on the frist
Sunday following the fool moon
after 21March.
• Christians gather together on
Eaսter Sunday for Sunrise
Service.
• Some Christians light a new fire
outside church early morning.
The Paschal candle, decorated
with studs to celebrates Christ’s
wounds, may be let from the fire
and carried into the church
where it is used to light the
candles of the worshippers.
Good Friday/Easter Monday

• Good Friday and Easter Monday are both public


holidays in the UK.
• On Good Friday Christians remember the day
when Jesus was crucified on across.
• Easter Monday has little religious significance
but is usually “fun” day.
On these days religions people…
• Fast
Some Christians go without food on Good
Friday. This helps them remember the
sacrifices Jesus made for them on the day of
crucifixion.
• Hold a procession
Some carry across trough the streets and
then into church.
• Have a special Church Service
Many Churches hold services lasting three

• Give chocolate eggs as presents
The eggs are either hallow or have a
filling, and are usually covered with
brightly colored silver paper. Around
80million chocolate eggs are eaten each
year in Britain.
• Have Easter Egg Hunts
Small chocolate eggs are hidden for
the children to find on the traditional
Easter Egg Hunt.
• Easter, like Christmas, has accumulates a great many
traditions, some of which have little to do with the Christmas
celebration of the Resurrection but derive from folk customs
• The use of painted and decorated Easter eggs was first
recorded I the 13th century. The church prohibited the eating
of eggs during Holy Week, but chickens continued to lay eggs
during that week, and the notion of specially indentifing
those as “Holy Week” eggs brought about their decoration.
The eggs itself become a symbol of the resurrection. Just us
Jesus rose from the tomb, the egg symbolizes new life
emerging from the eggshell. In the Orthodox tradition eggs
are painted red to symbolize the blood Jesus shed on the
cross.
• The custom of associating a
rabbit or bunny with Eater arose
in Protestant areas in Europe in
the 17th century but didn’t
become common until the 19th
century.
• In some European countries,
however, other animals- in
Switzerland the cuckoo, in
Westphalia the fox- brought the
Easter eggs.
