Introduction:-

 A synchronous motor is electrically identical with an

alternator or an ac generator.

 However when used as synchronous motor, the three phase ac

supply is connected to the stator and the external excitation is
connected to the rotor field.

 The speed of rotation is called as synchronous speed Ns which

is directly proportional to supply frequency.
Construction:-

 The construction of synchronous motor is same as that of an

alternator.

 It has two winding namely stator or armature and rotor or

field winding.

 The armature winding is placed in the slots which are

distributed over the entire yoke.
 The stator is connected to the 3 phase AC supply.

 The field winding is placed in the rotor slots and it is

connected to the DC supply via two slip rings.

 The DC supply is also called as excitation and it is obtained

from a DC shunt generator mounted on the same shaft.

 The rotor can be a salient-projected type or cylindrical type.

Normally the salient pole rotor is preferred.
Principle of Operation :-

Stator winding is connected to the 3 phase supply.

RMF rotating at synchronous speed is produced.

Rotor is excited by an external dc source.

Rotor is driven by some external device like a diesel engine in

the direction RMF at the same speed as that of RMF.

Once the stator and are magnetically coupled the diesel engine is
decoupled from the rotor.
Types of synchronous motor :-

1. Permanent magnet synchronous motor

2. Wound field synchronous motor

3. Reluctance type synchronous motor

Starting Methods For Synchronous Motor :-

1. Using a small DC machine.

2. Using a small induction motor.

3. Using a damper winding.

4. As a slip ring induction motor.

Advantages of synchronous motor :-

 Speed of operation is constant so very good speed regulation.

 It is possible to vary the power factor by adjusting the

excitation.
Disadvantages of synchronous motor :-

 It is not self starting.

 It needs to frequent maintenance.

 External DC source is necessary for providing excitation .

 Additional damper winding is necessary.

 Hunting take place it load is changed suddenly.

Application of synchronous motor :-

A constant speed of operation makes the synchronous motor

suitable for following application.

 Fans , blowers .

 Centrifugal pumps.

 Grinders.

 Textile mills, rolling mills, cement mills.

 machine tools.
