Social Interaction
 Refers to the mutual inter-stimulation & response
between 2 or more persons and groups through
symbols, language, gestures, & expression of ideas.

 The foundation of society. Without interaction there


would be no group life. For instance, interaction is the
major processes for the socialization of an individual
from birth to death, which exists in every culture.
Merrill:
 “Social interaction is the process of contact

where the behavior modifies slightly.”


Definition of Social Interaction

 “Social interaction is a process whereby men

inter-penetrate the mind of each other.


Forms of Social Interaction
 Between Individual and Individual
◦ Example: Doctor to Patient

 Person-to-person
◦ Example: Mother to daughter

 Individual – Group
◦ Singer / Band to audience

 Group to Group
◦ Army – Rebel group
2 Approaches to Social Interaction
 Symbolic
◦ It refers to the communication of thoughts and feelings
between individuals that occurs by means of symbols – such
us words, gestures, facial expressions, and sounds.

 Functionalist view
◦ - human interactions involves little more than people acting
out roles (parent, child, worker) based on social script, much
as theatrical actors take their lines from a play.

Types of Social Interaction

 Exchange
◦ Individuals, Groups, Societies interact in an effort to
receive a reward for their actions.

  Reciprocity  The idea that if you do something for


someone, they ower you something in return  Rewards can
be Material and Non-Material

 Exchange Theory
◦ People are motivated by self-interest
◦ Rewarded behavior tends to be repeated
 Competition
◦ 2 or more persons or groups oppose each other to
achieve a goal that only one can attain.

◦ Follows accepted rules of conduct.

◦ Positive but can lead to conflict.

 Conflict
◦ Deliberate attempt to control by force, oppose, or
harm the will of another person

◦ Conflict has few rules of conduct


Competition Conflict

 Compromise
◦ Two parties both give up something to come to an
agreement 

 Mediation
◦ A third party acts as a counselor in helping two parties reach
an agreement

 Truce
◦ Brings a halt to conflict until a compromise is reached.

 Arbitration
◦ A third party makes a decision that is binding on all parties
