Social Interaction
Refers to the mutual inter-stimulation & response
between 2 or more persons and groups through
symbols, language, gestures, & expression of ideas.
Person-to-person
◦ Example: Mother to daughter

◦ Singer / Band to audience

2 Approaches to Social Interaction
Symbolic
◦ It refers to the communication of thoughts and feelings
between individuals that occurs by means of symbols – such
us words, gestures, facial expressions, and sounds.
Functionalist view
◦ - human interactions involves little more than people acting
out roles (parent, child, worker) based on social script, much
as theatrical actors take their lines from a play.

Exchange
◦ Individuals, Groups, Societies interact in an effort to
receive a reward for their actions.
Exchange Theory
◦ People are motivated by self-interest
◦ Rewarded behavior tends to be repeated
Competition
◦ 2 or more persons or groups oppose each other to
achieve a goal that only one can attain.
Conflict
◦ Deliberate attempt to control by force, oppose, or
harm the will of another person
•Friendly and has positive effects •Aggressive and could lead to bad
outcomes.
•Has rules and regulations that
each should follow •No Rules applied. Win or to defeat
an opponent at all costs regardless
of rules and proper conduct
Cooperation
◦ Occurs when 2 or more persons or groups work together to
achieve a goal that will benefit many people.
ACCOMMODATION
◦ State of balance between cooperation and conflict

Compromise
◦ Two parties both give up something to come to an
agreement
Mediation
◦ A third party acts as a counselor in helping two parties reach
an agreement
Truce
◦ Brings a halt to conflict until a compromise is reached.
Arbitration
◦ A third party makes a decision that is binding on all parties
