MICROPROCESSOR

Ä The microprocessor consists of the control unit

and arithmetic unit of a computer which etched on
a single chip.
Ä It can be placed on the tip of little finger.
Ä It connects to Motherboard via one of
Socket
Integration
Ä It is sometimes referred to as the brain of the
computer.
Ä Typical microprocessor operation include addition
subtraction, comparing two no. and fetching no. from
one area to another.
Ä After the computer is on the microprocessor is
designed in such a way that to get the first instruction

Ä Invention of INTEGRATED CIRCUIT in the IIND generation
computer ( It allowed hundreds of transistors to be packed on a

Ä In the IVTH generation computer 8 bit microprocessor like
8080TM, Z80TM, 6800TM were introduced

80286
Ä The first processor in the 80*86 family was
An Intel 80286
the 16 bits 8086 which was capable of
Microprocessor
addressing 1 MB of memory.
Ä The advanced processor that followed the
8086 was 80286
Ä Intel 80286 was Introduced on Feb 1, 1982
Ä It was 16 bit microprocessor with 134000
AMD 80286 transistors.
at 12 MHz
Ä It was widely used in IBM PC compatible
computers during mid 1980s to early 1990s
Ä Its performance was more than twice of that intel
8086 and intel 8088
Ä It was the first processor with protected mode.
80386

Ä The Intel386 or 80386 is a microprocessor which

has been used as the central processing unit (CPU)
of many personal computers since 1986
Ä During its design phase the processor was code-
named simply "P3", the third-generation processor
in the x86 line, but is normally referred to as either
Ú386 or just 386.
Ä It operated at about 5 MIPS to 11.4 MIPS (million
instructions per second)
Ä It was the first x86 processor to have a 32-bit
architecture
PENTIUM

Ä VÚnod Dham is often referred to as the father of the

Intel Pentium processor
Ä The Pentium brand refers to Intel's single-core x86
microprocessor based on the P5 fifth-generation
75 MHz classic microarchitecture. The name 'Pentium' was derived
Pentium from the Greek penta, meaning 'five', and the Latin
processor ending -ium.
Ä Introduced on March 22, 1993 the Pentium
succeeded the Intel486, which number "4" signified
the fourth-generation microarchitecture
Ä Biggest reason of using the name Pentium was that,
courts had disallowed trademarking of names
Pentium containing numbers - like "286", "Ú386", "Ú 86" -
logo, with though, sometimes, the Pentium is unofficially
MMX referred to as Ú86.
enhancement
Ä Starting in 1995, Intel (inconsistently) used the "Pentium"
registered trademark in the names of families of post-fifth-
generations of x86 processors branded as the Pentium Pro,
Pentium II, Pentium III, Pentium 4 and Pentium D
