THE PASSIVE VOICE
1. The passive voice is a form in English used to show interest in the person or object that experiences an
action rather than the person or object that performs the action.
- La voz pasiva es una forma en Ingles que se usa para mostrar interes en la persona u objeto que
experimenta una accion, en lugar de la persona u objeto que realiza la accion.
2. Sometimes we also use the Passive Voice because we don’t know or do not want to express who
performed the action.
- Algunas veces usamos la Voz Pasiva porque no sabemos o no queremos expresar quien hace/realiza la
accion.
3. The main form of the Passive Voice is:
OBJECT + VERB TO BE + VERB IN

PARTICIPLE
- The Passive Voice can be formed in all tenses in English, as well as, all sentence types positive, negative
or question.
- La Voz Pasiva puede ser formada en todos los tiempos en Ingles, como tambien, todo tipo de oraciones,
afirmativas, negativas y preguntas.
VERB TO BE:
• PRESENT : AM – IS – ARE
• PAST: WAS – WERE
• FUTURE: WILL BE / HE IS GOING TO BE
• PRESENT PERFECT: HAVE/ HAS BEEN
PRESENT PAST PARTICIPLE

BE WAS/WERE BEEN
- In general, when we speak it is more common to use ACTIVE VOICE. An ACTIVE
VOICE SENTENCE is one in which the subject is the one who performs the
action. However, we can also use PASSIVE VOICE SENTENCES. In a PASSIVE
VOICE SENTENCE, the subject of the sentence is not who performs the action
but who receives it.
- En general, cuando hablamos es mas comun utilizar VOZ ACTIVA. An ACTIVE
VOICE SENTENCE es aquella en la que el sujeto es el que realiza la accion. No
obstante, tambien podemos utilizar oraciones en VOZ PASIVA. En una oracion
en VOZ PASIVA el sujeto de la frase no es quien realiza la accion sino quien la
recibe.
- HE READS THE NEWSPAPER
IMPORTANT:
- If we mention in the sentence the subject that performs the action, this will
normally be preceded by the preposition “BY” and an OBJECT PRONOUN.
- Si en la oracion de Voz Pasiva mencionamos el sujeto (persona) que realiza la
accion, este ira normalmente precedido de la preposicion “BY” = POR, y el
pronombre objeto.

P = ARE - ISN’T/AREN’T
- Mary write a letter A. A letter is written by Mary /her

object N. A letter isn’t written by Mary
Exercise:
The man drives the car everyday THE CAR IS DRIVEN BY THE MAN /HIM EVERY..
EX.
1. The students read the sentences
The sentences read by the students
2.The girl doesn’t clean the kitchen - The kitchen isn’t cleaned by the girl
* Identifique el objeto de la oracion, despues del verbo en la oracion.

P=WERE WASN’T-WEREN’T
was not / were not
They repaired the house last week A. The house was repaired by them last week
They didn’t repair the house N. The house wasn’t repaired by them last week
Ex. 1. My mom cooked the fish last night

the fish was cooked by my mom last night
2. The engineer didn’t build the bridge
the bridge wasn’t built by the engineer

3. PRESENT CONTINUOUS OBJ + S=IS + BEING + V.PARTICIPLE
PRESENT PROGRESSIVE P=ARE
is not = are not / ISN’T-AREN’T
She is buying some flowers at the market A. Some flowers are BEING bought by HER at the market
She isn’t buying some flowers……. N. Some flowers aren’t BEING bought by her at the market.
EX: 1. Tom is reading the newspaper now

The newspaper is being read by Tom now
2. The teachers are not drinking coffee at the café
coffee isn’t being drunk by the teachers at the cafe
VOICE
4. FUTURE – WILL OBJ + WILL BE + V. PARTICIPLE
WON’T BE = WILL NOT BE
I will paint my room next month A. My room will BE painted by ME next month
I won’t paint my room….. N. My room won’t BE painted by ME next month
Ex. 1. The man will present the show

The show will be presented by the man
2. The secretary will not write the report
the report won’t be written by the secretary
VOICE
5. PAST CONTINUOUS OBJ + S=WAS + BEING + V.PARTICIPLE
PAST PROGRESSIVE P=WERE
was not (wasn’t)- were not (weren’t)
The journalists were interviewing the actors A. The actors were BEING interviewed by them
The journalists weren’t interviewing the actors N.The actors weren’t BEING interviewed by the journalists
EX: 1. The dogs were eating their food eat ate eaten
their food was being eaten by the dogs
2. The woman wasn’t cleaning the windows
the windows weren’t being cleaned by the woman

6. PRESENT PERFECT OBJ + S=HAS + BEEN + V. PARTICIPLE
HAVE/HAS+V.PARTICIPLE P=HAVE hasn’t- haven’t
They have cleaned the living room A. The living room has BEEN cleaned by THEM
They haven’t cleaned the living room N. The living room hasn’t BEEN cleaned by THEM
has not been
Ex.
1. She has sung the song in the concert sing sang sung
the song has been sung in the concert
2. The students haven’t read the newspaper
the newspaper hasn’t been read by the students
VOICE
7. MODALS OBJ + MODAL BE + V.PARTICIPLE
CAN – MAY can’t – may not – might not – mustn’t
MIGHT – MUST shouldn’t – couldn’t
SHOULD – COULD
- He can drive the new car A. The new car can BE driven by HIM
He can’t drive the new car N. The new car can’t BE driven by HIM
EXE: 1. The girl should do the homework
the homework should be done by the girl
2. My mom couldn’t buy oranges at the supermarket
oranges couldn’t BE bought by my mom
