Practitioner Statement

Dr. Susan J Jones

Faculty of Computer Science
Practitioner Statement
 With the Requirements Specification and Schedule in place
your project is underway
 Over the remainder of the project, you will implement your
plan, aiming to deliver the prototype on time
 A key assessment deliverable is a ‘Practitioner Statement’
 In this report you explain and justify the approaches,
methods, tools and techniques you have used
 The report is a seven page document written entirely in your
own words
 The Practitioner Statement is worth 15% of the overall mark
and should be an evolving document as your project is being
implemented
Derivation of Practitioner Statement

Schedule Practitioner
Statement

 Your schedule will embody your own professional practice

 It should be unique to you
 The Practitioner Statement is derived from this schedule
 The two documents go hand in hand
 A good schedule will underpin a good Practitioner Statement

No two Practitioner Statements will be the same

Schedule Refinement
 Your schedule fulfills two roles
 Firstly it is a working, planning document that can
be adjusted depending upon how the project
proceeds with the goal of finishing on time Schedule
 Secondly it embodies and demonstrates your
practitioner knowledge and practice
 This means that you can refine and adjust the task
descriptors and deliverables to reflect your
improving practitioner knowledge and skills
 In other words the Schedule will be adjusted and
improved as you proceed Practitioner

 Once your design work is underway, you should
start to write your Practitioner Statement
Investigation and Application
 In the time available, and with the breadth of programmes
involved in the module, it is impossible to supplement the
teaching significantly with information of methods and
approaches
 However, as with all modules at Level 3, you are expected to
‘read’ around and investigate/research
 In this context, this means investigation and applying
contemporary approaches and methods in your own
professional practice
 You will glean ideas from your past and current modules
 But by developing good practitioner behaviours you will
improve your chances of achieving a high mark for the
Practitioner Statement
Report Formatting
 The Practitioner Statement is a seven page narrative
 Only your OWN diagrams are allowed, but a minimum of five full
pages of written textual information is required
 You may use a maximum of six section headings
 None of the following are allowed
 Bullets, lists, tables, diagrams you have taken from books,
papers or the web
 You should write in paragraphs, approximately three to the page
 The content of the Practitioner Statement needs to be a very
close match to the Schedule.
 No tool or technique should be implemented without some
explanation of its use in the Practitioner Statement and vice
versa
Feedback
 As soon as you have started to write
your Practitioner Statement, seek
feedback from your client (tutor)
 Do not leave the writing of this Schedule
statement until the end of the project
 The statement needs to be well
written and presented
 So this needs iterative development
and refinement
