Bending Test
This type of testing method is used to determine flexural properties of composite material under
bending. In this study, three-point bending scheme was chosen for coupon level testing whereas
three-point bending scheme was selected for coupon level testing.

Four testing trials are decided on each of the above cases and the testing is done to
• Evaluate static flexural stiffness of sandwich panels with and without rigid inserts of wooden
stations of different distance of the core by 3-point Bend Tests as per American Society for Testing
of Materials - ASTM C393.
• Evaluate static flexural stiffness parameters of sandwich panel of different core configurations.
To assess the static behavior of sandwich panels, Flexural 3-Point tests have been carried out as
per the guidelines of ASTM standards to determine the stiffness constants. Flexural tests have
also been conducted with rigid inserts incorporated in the sandwich panels to determine the
extent of increase in the stiffness.

Three-Point Bending
• One of the most common types of test used for testing of composite panels for their
mechanical properties is a three-point bending test. It can be performed on regular
rectangular composite panels with simple apparatus.
• The tensile test will give accurate properties for Young’s Modulus and tensile strength of a
material. This type of test will also give you inter laminar shear strength of curved specimens.
• The shear strength can be calculated by using the same equations used for bending of
prismatic bars
• The primary disadvantage is that the stresses in specimens subjected to three-point bending
are inherently non-uniform and vary in kind i.e. tension on one side of the specimen and
compression on the other side making the results comparatively harder to interpret than any
of the uni-axial tests.

• Step-wise Procedure for Bending Tests
• Width and thickness of test panel were measured at three different locations.
• Cross sectional area was calculated from average width and thickness.
• Digital dial gauges were mounted at mid-span.
• Test panel was placed on the concrete support and was centrally aligned load cell
and digital dial gauge are kept ready to acquire data. Load was applied manually
with gear system.
• Data for load versus deflection were recorded.
• This procedure was repeated for each panel

Sandwich Panel Testing
Case 1: Aluminum sheet of thickness 2mm each (s1)
• The deformation of Aluminum sheet under three-point bending is evaluated at
different loading condition and the deflection results observed and recorded. The
schematic diagram fig 2 is illustrated the three-point bending scheme of aluminum
sheets.

The maximum bending stress and shear stress of Aluminum sheet and PU foam core
with different core material configuration are plotted in bar chart and it is evident
that specimen s4 (wood stations at distance 50mm) show maximum value of bending
stress and shear stress at static three-point bend condition. Aluminum sheet and PU
foam core under three-point bending is evaluated at different loading condition and
the bending stress and shear stress observed and recorded
