Learning Targets
■ Differentiate physical and chemical changes,
■ Classify changes in matter as physical or chemical.
■ Demonstrate and explain how heat can cause change in matter, and
■ Demonstrate and explain how the presence or lack of oxygen can cause
change in matter.

What are the two changes in matter?

 Physical Change
 Chemical Change

Physical Change

OM
SLIDESMANIA.C
Physical Change
■ It is a change in matter where its
appearance, form, shape, or size
may be altered but its composition
stays the same or it does not
change into new substance.

PHSYICAL CHANGE

1. Melting

 It is a process by which solids

change to liquids due to the
addition or absorption of heat.

PHSYICAL CHANGE

2. Evaporation

 It is a process by which solids a

phase of matter chnages from
liquid to gas or vapor.

PHSYICAL CHANGE

3. Condensation

 It is a process when liquid forms

from gas to vapor.

 Water vapor condenses when

moist air is cooled below its dew
point.

4. Solidification
 Also known as freezing

 It is a process by which state of

matter changes from liquid to
solid.

 Water solidifies at 0°C.

5. Sublimation
 It is the change of state of
matter from solid to gas without
passing the liquid state.

Chemical Change
■ It is a change in matter when there
is a chemical reaction or change in
its internal composition.

OM

CHEMICAL
CHANGE
1. Combustion

 It is the chemical reaction that occurs

when oxygen reacts with flammable
substance to create heat and light.

CHEMICAL
CHANGE
2. Electrolysis

 It is the process of using electricity to

break a compound into simpler
elements or substances.

CHEMICAL
CHANGE
3. Oxidation

 It is the reaction that occurs when an

inflammable substance is exposed to
oxygen and this results in a change in
the chemical properties of substance.

CHANGE
4. Tarnishing

 It is when a bright metal is exposed to

a non-metal, usually oxygen, sulphur
dioxide, or hydrogen sulphide, it
produces a dark color.
