Introduction to contemporary art
• During this period Raja Ravi Varma was a popular artist who began to flourish in different
metropolitan cities of India and trained art students.
• His painting was based on mythological scenes in a realistic style.
• The younger generation Inspired from the West or the East to give a new meaning to Indian art
• Despite the efforts of the Bengal school, western art influences the younger generation to revive the
classical tradition of Indian art.
• The young artist was more influenced and attracted by the western art style, some of them are going
to western.

Pioneers of contemporary Indian art

• Indian art pioneers are Raja Ravi Varma, Abanindranath Tagore, Amrita Shergil, Rabindra Nath
Tagore, Jamini Roy, Nandlal Bose, and D. P. Roy Chowdhury
• Among all painters, Amrita Shergill was the one famous lady painter who is famous for their
individualistic style of painting.
• The combination of both Western technique and Indian spiritualism created an ideal painting in
this period and became the essence of Indian art.
• Some of the young artist's name Benode Behari Mukherjee, Ramkinkar Vaij, Sailoz Mukherjee,
showed interest in Japanese art and Folk Art.
• Western artist used these techniques, Graphics and print making in art.
Themes of art work
• Hamsa Damayanti: In 1898, used oil on canvas as a medium made by Raja Ravi
Varma, the illustration caused a sensation when it was first displayed at the Madras
Fine Arts Exhibition
• Bramhcharis : In 1938, painting done by Amrita Shergill with the help of oil on
canvas as a medium depicts the simplicity of young Brahmin students, symbolized
as devotion in the Hindu faith.
• The Atrium: In 1920, using watercolors on paper, he created this work with its
cubically broken forms, like a cubist. His painting shows a fine blend of light and
produces dramatic effects.

• In this period, people used to do painting with printmaking techniques, and with this,
a lot of copy would come out.
• In 1965, painting techniques were used in this period, their names are: Etching, dry
point, aquatint, intaglio, lithography, oleography.
Themes of art work
• Whirl Pool : in 1962, Intaglio on paper as a medium used by Krishna
• Mediaeval Saints: (Benode Bihari Mukherjee) he developed a wall painting in 1947
with the help of the “fresco Buono” technique to shows saints of different religions
of India to create harmony and rhythm.
• Words and symbols: In 1965, K.C.S. Panikar developed a painting with the help of
oil on board, as a medium in which he designed a horoscope-like design using
mathematical symbols, Arabic figures, Roman scripts and Malayalam scripts, Tantric
symbols
• Landscape in Red: In 1961, using an oil medium by Francis Newton Souza, he
captured a city view in their painting that was not more than a concrete jungle and
that reflected the mysterious character of the cities.
