PHARMACOGNOSY
Pharmacognosy is one of the five
disciplines of Pharmacy. The word
Pharmacognosy is first time introduced in
19th Century. It is derived from two Greek
words.

o “Pharmakon” means a drug”


o “gignosco” means “to acquire knowledge
of”

FOUNDERS
John Adam Schmidt first
used the word
“Pharmacognosy” in 1811.

C. A Seydler again used this


term in 1815 in his thesis
entitled “Analecta
Pharmacognostica” to
describe medicinal plants.

DEFINITION

"Pharmacognosy is an applied science


that deals with the biologic, biochemical,
and economic features of natural drugs
and their constituents."

Explanation

Hence, Pharmacognosy is the study of crude


drugs (unprocessed drugs) from natural
sources including plants, animals and
mineral sources and their constituents.

HISTORY
Origin: Pharmacognosy has been a part of
the healing arts and sciences since mankind
first began to treat diseases.

Ancient civilizations: People used parts of


plants and animals to prepare various
potions (mixture formulations) to eliminate
pain, control suffering, and counteract
disease.

Babylonian: (626-539 B.C):
The Babylonian early
writings indicated their
awareness about medicinal
effects of certain plants.
Egyptian:
Papyrus Ebers (1550 B.C.)
human anatomy,
Dead embalming by use of
natural preservatives
Medicinal effects of plants.

GREEK ERA
Dioscorides (40–90 A.D.)
 Greek physician
 "De Materia Medica“(78 A.D.) 600
medicinal plants.
 E.g. Aloe, belladonna, colchicum, ergot,
hyoscamus, and opium

Galen (131-200 A.D.)


 Greek pharmacist-physician
 Formulation containing plant and
animal drugs. .
 As a tribute to his contributions the
term “galenical” pharmacy was
