Verb to be

What is the verb to be?

The verb to be, is probably the most used verb in the
English language and also the most important.

This verb also presents variations in the present, past

and simple future verb tenses.

Examples:

David's birthday will be March 23

(El cumpleaños de David será el 23 de marzo)

The glass of water is on the table

(El vaso de agua está en la mesa)

I am in the library
(Yo estoy en la biblioteca)
Uses of the verb to be
Can be used in many ways in everyday life. It
can be applied to describe a person, to indicate
time or date, or to specify the location of
something.

The verb To be is of allmost importance in the English

language. It is used to express age, to express feelings, to
talk about the weather, etc.

English verbs are a fundamental element in learning the

language. In fact, I think it happens with any language,
since verbs are the words that describe action.
AUXILIARY
DO - DOES - DID
Do It is used for questions and answers with the pronouns
(We, I, You and They).

Example:

Do they play tennis? / ¿Ellos juegan tenis?

Yes, they do. / Sí.

The auxiliary DO has no translation, but it has grammatical importance.

The same happens with DOES.
Does
This auxiliary is used for questions and answers with
the pronouns (He, She and it).

Example:

Does he study English? / ¿Él estudia inglés?

Yes, he does. / Sí.

As we said before, DOES has no translation in English, but

it is important in the grammatical aspect.
Did It is used in English in the verb tense called the simple past.

Example:

• Did he write this letter? / ¿Él escribió esta carta?

In the above sentence, we can translate all the words except the auxiliary did:

He: él
Write: escribir
This: esta
Letter: carta

The auxiliary DID does not mean anything, so why do we use it?

We use it for a simple, but, at the same time, powerful reason: to form the correct
structure of interrogative sentences and negative sentences in the simple past in English.
Perfect Times
It is used to talk about actions that started in the past and
continue in the present, or things that happened in the recent
past, but are still important.

It is constructed with the verb have or has.

Use of the present perfect tense
1. Affirmative Sentences (Frases afirmativas)

Subject + auxiliary verb (to have) + past participle...

Examples:

I have [I’ve] talked to Peter / He hablado con Peter.

She has [She’s] gone to work / Ha ido a su trabajo.

We have [We’ve] been to London / Hemos ido a Londres.

2. Negative Sentences (Frases negativas)

Sujeto + verbo auxiliar (to have) + “not” + participio pasado…

Examples:

I haven’t talked to Peter / No he hablado con Peter.

She hasn’t gone to work / No ha ido a su trabajo.

We haven’t been to London / No hemos ido a Londres.

3. Interrogative Sentences (Frases interrogativas)

Verbo auxiliar (to have) + sujeto + participio pasado…?

Examples:

Have you talked to Peter? / ¿Has hablado con Peter?

Has she gone to work? / ¿Ha ido a su trabajo?

Have you been to London? / ¿Has ido a Londres?
