INTRODUCTION
 A wound-rotor motor is a type of induction motor where
the rotor windings are connected through slip to external
resistances.

 Adjusting the resistance allows control of the speed/torque

characteristic of the motor.

 Wound-rotor motors can be started with low inrush current.

CRANE DUTY MOTOR
 Slip ring crane duty motors are specially designed for
service on cranes and hoists.

 They can also be used for similar applications such as

material handling equipments, and cranes of all types.

 These motors can serve as auxiliary motors in rolling

mills or wherever intermittent duty drives are required
FAILURES IN MOTOR
 Mechanical failures:
1.Defects In Bearings
At first inspection for bearings and housings is done to check dirt,
damage, dents, scratches or any other kind of distortion.

2.Stator and Rotor not aligned

Proper alignment of stator and rotor is important for proper
functioning of the motor, else air gap may not be uniform and after a
certain limit it may cause rubbing between the stator and the rotor.
3.Defects in Slip Rings
The carbon brushes in contact with the rotating slip rings may at times
damage the surface of the slip rings due to sparking.

4.Shaft bending
Reasons of shaft bending are load jamming, improper handling,
improper load alignment.
5.Failure of end cover:
Due to any kind of mechanical failure the end covers may get
damage.

6.Problems in coupling
 Electrical failures:
1.Terminal Lead Failure
The three terminals of the motor may get damaged due to high voltage
or current.

2. Winding interturn
The winding interturn causes short circuit in the stator winding. 30 -40
% of faults in induction machine is due to interturn faults.
3.Earth fault
If any of the part of stator or rotor windings gets connected to the
earth due to failure of insulation.

4.Winding cut/open Fault

Heat developed inside the motors sometimes can be sustained by
the insulation of the winding.
TESTING:
1.Megger test:
This test is basically for the insulation test.

Less than 1 mega ohm- rewinding

1- 2 mega ohm – furnace
Above 2 mega ohm - testing

2.HIGH VOLTAGE TEST:

voltage supply is given from high voltage tester (2.4kv) for 1
min. If proper insulation is there then it can sustain the voltage ,
if not then voltage will drop and leakage current obtained.

3.Current balance test:
Rated current is given to the stator and the rotating magnetic field is checked
and phase voltage is noted.

4.Impulse test: surge tester is switched on and on the display graphs of

the two phases are checked if they are superimposing or not otherwise earth
fault is there as the faulty part starts to spark.

REMEDIES
1.REWINDING-The windings which get burned due to short
circuit or the earth fault must be properly re winded.

2. PROPER ALIGNEMENT-Proper instruments must be used for

proper alignment between the stator and the rotor, shaft and
bearings so as to avoid motor imbalance.

3.LUBRICATION-For smooth running of the bearing and hence

the rotor, adequate amount of grease should be used for providing
the lubrication.

4.CORE REPAIR-Stator core is repaired replacing the stampings

and applying the laminations over it.
