Nativist Theory

NOAM
CHOMSKY
Avram Noam Chomsky
Born on December 7th,
1928.
He's an American linguist,
philosopher, cognitive scientist,
logician, historian, political critic
and activist.

He is known as the "father

of linguistics".
He has been described as a
prominent cultural figure and was
Noam voted as one of the top public

Chomsky intellectuals in 2005.

Central Idea
of the Nativist Theory

THE NATIVIST THEORY IS A

BIOLOGICALLY BASED
THEORY THAT ARGUES THAT
HUMANS ARE PRE-
PROGRAMMED WITH THE
INNATE ABILITY TO
DEVELOP LANGUAGE.
INNATE IS A NATURAL ABILITY WHICH MEANS
YOU'RE BORN WITH IT.
Nativist theorists argue that
children are born with an innate
ability to organize laws of
language, which enables children
to easily learn a native language.
They believe that children have
language-specific abilities that
assist them as they work towards
mastering a language.
Children are born in possession of an innate ability to comprehend
language structures. In his theory of "Universal Grammar",
Chomsky says that all human languages are built upon a common
structural basis. He argues that language acquisition occurs as a
child's capacity to recognize the underlying structure at the root of
any language.
Chomsky emphasizes that children pass through a stage
of language alertness during the critical age, which is
set to be from birth till puberty. He explains, "There's a
particular period of maturation in which, with external
stimulation of the appropriate kind, the capacity will
pretty suddenly develop and mature."

Issues/

Related

Learning and
Acquisition
Using the
Nativist Theory
1.LACK OF EVIDENCE
TO SUPPORT THE
THEORY.

2. THE THEORY
IGNORES THE
IMPORTANCE OF
SOCIAL INTERACTION.

3. THE THEORY CANNOT

EXPLAIN WHY INDIVIDUALS
WITH CERTAIN LEARNING
DISABILITIES SUCH AS DOWN
SYNDROME HAVE DELAYED
LANGUAGE.
4. THE LANGUAGE INPUT
THAT THE CHILD RECEIVES
THE OUTSIDE DATA LACKS
EXPLICIT CORRECTIONS FOR
THEIR GRAMMATICAL
ERRORS.

5. IT DOES NOT HAVE

ENOUGH
reliable information for the
child to learn these rules as
they learn other facts and
relationships (Guasti, 2002;
Radford, 2004)
Interventions
Offered Nativist theory has influenced

to Improve language intervention practices

(Ebbels, van der Lely, &
Language Dockrell, 2007; Levy &
Learning and Friedmann, 2009). Connell
Acquisition (1988), for example, explored
language
intervention as a search for
triggers to the parameter setting
process.
This intervention focused
on examples that clearly
showed the contrast
between the child’s
incorrect form and the
correct form of the subject
pronoun—setting the
subject parameter
appropriately for English.
Nativist theory suggested that
once this parameter was set,
the children would show
improvement on multiple
structures related to subject
properties.
Connell provided evidence that
such an approach may be
effective, but of course this
did not settle the debate
about the nature of
language acquisition.
CONCLUSION
To conclude, Nativist Theory
argues that humans are pre-
programmed with the innate ability to
develop language and Noam
Chomsky associated with the nativist
perspective, developed the idea of
Language Acquisition Device (LAD)
CONCLUSION

Moreover, Noam
Chomsky has been a
huge help in developing
a theory on linguistics,
and language
development in
children.
