Long Column

1) A rectangular concrete column with dimensions 300mm x 300mm and length of 4.5m is braced against sidesway. 2) The column experiences factored moments of 110 kN-m at the top and 120 kN-m at the bottom and carries factored axial loads of 150 kN (dead) and 350 kN (live). 3) The magnified factored moment Mc is calculated to be 125.03 kN-m using the moment magnification method for braced columns.

Problem no.

A 350 mm by 300 mm rectangular concrete column is reinforced with

three 25-mm-diameter bars in each Short side with their centers65 mm
from extreme concrete. Concrete strength f'c = 21 MPa and steel yield
strength is 415 MPa. The column is subject to axial load and moment
about its strong axis.
a. Determine the nominal axial load Pn when the eccentricity e = 0.
b. Compute the balanced nominal load Pbn .
c. If the eccentricity e = 200 mm, find the nominal load Pn.

LONG or SLENDER
COLUMN

For columns for which the slenderness ratio lies
between 22 and 100, and therefore the slenderness
effect on load-carrying capacity must be taken into
account, either an elastic analysis can be performed
to evaluate the effects of lateral deflections and
other effects producing secondary stresses, or an
approximate method based on MOMENT
MAGNIFICATION may be used.
SECTION 410.11.1 Slender effects shall be permitted to be
neglected in the following cases
 A. Compression Member not braced against sidesway

M1 – smaller
r=0.30 h (tied column) – parallel to stability
factored end
 B. Compression Member braced against sidesway moment

M2 – larger
  is positive for single curvature factored end
moment
is positive for double curvature
MAGNIFIED MOMENTS – NONSWAY FRAMES

Mc = δ M2 Mc – Moment Curvature

 Where : Cm = 1.0 For members with transverse loads

δ = ≥ 1.0 between supports

Cm = 0.6 + 0.4 (M1 + M2) For members

without transverse loads between supports

Pc ( Critical Column Load) can taken as:

Pc = EI – Flexural Stiffness

EI =

Or :
EI =

M2min = Pu (15 +0.03 h)

A rectangular tied concrete column has dimensions of 300mm x 300mm. the
column length is 4.5 m and is to be used in a frame braced against sidesway
( the effective length factor k can be taken as 1 and EI = 34MN – m2 ) the
column is loaded in single curvature by the ultimate (factored) moments of 110
kN-m at its top end and 120 kN-m at its bottom end. The column carries
factored axial load due to dead load of 150 kN and 350 kN due to live load.
Calculate the magnified factored moment Mc.

Given : K = 1.0 Solution :
Lu = 4.5 m

EI = 34MN – m2 = = 50
End Moments : Top = 110 kN-m
 For Braced against sidesway :
Bottom = 120 kN-m
Pu (DL) = 150 kN
Pu (LL) = 350 kN

Therefore : LONG COLUMN
Given : K = 1.0 Mc = δ M2
Lu = 4.5 m
EI = 34MN – m2 M2min = Pu (15 +0.03 h)
End Moments : Top = 110 kN-m
Pu = 150 + 350 = 500 kN
Bottom = 120 kN-m
Pu (DL) = 150 kN M2min = 500 (15 + 0.03(300))
Pu (LL) = 350 kN
M2min = 12 kN-m < 120 KN-m (ok)
δ = ≥ 1.0

Pc =

Pc = = 16571.19 kN Mc = 1.042 (120) = 125.03 kN (answer)
