DEBOLINA SUR PRESENTED BY BIPASHA SEN B.ED SEM 2 INTRODUCTION • Achievement test is a type of test that evaluates the ability to do something. • They help in measuring the level of changes brought in an individual’s thinking through learning. • These tests are based on the subject content/language content/prescribed syllabus which is already taught. • Achievement tests come handy in giving educational direction to students based on their performance and in selecting the appropriate topic for them. PURPOSE OF ACHIEVEMENT TESTING • The primary aim is to evaluate an individual. However, they are also known to kick-start an action plan. • These tests are also used to facilitate an integrated approach where grammar and vocabulary are seamlessly combined within reading text. • Achievement tests measure how well students have internalised and mastered a particular subject during a course of instruction. CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD ACHIEVEMENT TEST • It should be reliable, as in, it should produce the same results when measured or evaluated. • It should have a description of measured behaviour. • It should provide equivalent and comparable forms of the test. • It must have objectivity in scoring and in interpreting the results. • It must have great usability for classroom teachers, and so explicit instructions should be given. STEPS TO PLAN AN ACHIEVEMENT TEST 1. Determining the purpose of testing. 2. Selecting class/level along with the purpose. 3. Selection of subject, topic, unit, and sub-unit. 4. Determining behavioural objectives. 5. Preparing design/ability based marks distribution. 6. Making a blue-print. 7. Preparing the test. 8. Preparing score key. 9. Setting marking scheme. 10. With the help of achievement tests, a teacher can effectively generate accurate instructional designs and strategies and implement the same in the classroom.
