AC Servomotor – Basic Working

• An AC servo motor is basically a two phase

induction motor except for certain special design
features. A two phase induction motor consisting of
two stator windings oriented 90 degrees electrically
apart in space and excited by ac voltage which differ
in time phase by 90 degrees. Generally voltages of
equal magnitude and 90 degrees phase difference
are applied to the two stator phases thus making
their respective fields 90 degrees apart in both time
and space resulting in a magnetic field of constant
magnitude rotating at synchronous speed.
AC Servomotor – Basic Working

• The direction of rotation depends upon the

phase relationship of input voltage V1 and V2.
As the field sweeps over the short circuited
rotor, voltages are induced in it producing
current in it . The rotating magnetic field
interacts with these currents producing a
torque on the rotor in the direction of field
orientation
• P=Ia*Eb and
• Torque=P*1.019*104 *60/2πN gm/cm

Experimental Setup
Graph of Speed Torque and Eb
Procedure Part-A
• Switch ON the power supply.
• Switch ON switch S1.
• Connect DVM ( 20 V dc range) across DC motor back emf
sockets (red & black).
• Slowly increase control P1 so that AC servomotor starts
rotating. Increase the speed to approximately 1100 RPM. Note
the reading of back emf.
• Slowly decrease the control P1 and vary the speed of
servomotor in steps of 50 RPM and note the speed N rpm and
corresponding back emf Eb across DC motor.
• Plot the graph between speed and back emf.
Procedure Part-B
Connect
• a DVM ( Range 200 V AC) across servomotor control
winding sockets.
Increase the control P1 and set the Servomotor voltage to 80V and
note speed N rpm. Since no load has been imposed on the motor so
this is the NO-Load speed.

Switch On S2 to impose load on the motor due to which the speed

of AC motor decreases. Increase the load current by means of P2
slowly in steps of 50 RPM and note corresponding load current Ia.

Calculate P=Ia*Eb and Torque=P*1.019*10460/2.2.14Ngm/cm.

Repeat the above steps for a servomotor voltage equal to 70 V.
Plot a graph between speed and torque for both voltage settings on
the same graph and observe the affect of change in voltage.

Result and Conclusion
• The graph is plotted between speed and torque. As we
reduce the speed of the motor the torque goes on
increasing therefore the graph starts with a low value
and rises to a high value approximately linearly .

• We have successfully verified speed torque

characteristics of ac servo motor.
