Polynomial Functions

The document discusses polynomial functions, defining them as functions with only nonnegative integer exponents. It explains how to identify the degree of a polynomial by looking at the highest exponent, and defines the leading term as the term with the highest degree and the leading coefficient. Various examples are provided to illustrate how to determine if a function is a polynomial and identify the degree, leading term, and coefficient.

Let us recall!
What Greek words do the word
POLYNOMIAL come from?

Answer:
“poly” and “nominal”
Let us recall!
What do the words “poly” and “nominal”
means?

Answer:
“poly” means many and
“nominal” means terms
Let us recall!
What do the words “poly” and “nominal”
means?
Answer:
“poly” means many and
“nominal” means terms
So polynomial means many terms.
Let us recall!
• How many terms are there in the
polynomial expression 2𝑥3+𝑥2+1?

Answer:
There are three (3) terms in this
expression: 2𝑥3, 𝑥2 & 1.
Objectives:
– Identify polynomial function; and
– determine the degree, the leading term
and coefficient and the constant
ACTIVITY
Check this out!!
Directions: Identify whether the given are polynomial
functions or not.

Questions:
• How do you find the activity?
• What is your understanding in
identifying whether the given function is
a polynomial?
• Is a linear function and quadratic
function a polynomial function?
Let’s take a look at why the given functions are polynomial and other given are not.

NOT it has a negative exponent

Note: This doesn’t mean that radicals and
fraction are not allowed in polynomials. They
just can’t involve variables.
There are various types of polynomial functions based on the degree of
the polynomial. The most common types are:
• What is the degree of the functions?
2
𝑓 ( 𝑥 )=4 𝑥 −2𝑥+2
3 4
𝑓 ( 𝑥 )= 2𝑥 +4𝑥 +𝑥−2
2 3
𝑓 ( 𝑥 )=𝑥−2𝑥 +3 𝑥
10 9
𝑓 ( 𝑥 )=8−𝑥 +3 𝑥
• What is the degree of the functions?

• Degree 2

3 4
𝑓 ( 𝑥 )= 2𝑥 +4𝑥 +𝑥−2 • Degree 4
2 3 • Degree 3
𝑓 ( 𝑥 )=𝑥−2𝑥 +3 𝑥 •
Degree 5

10 9 • Degree 10
𝑓 ( 𝑥 )=8−𝑥 +3 𝑥
The Leading Term, Coefficient and the
Constant
• The leading coefficient is the
coefficient of the term with the
highest degree.
• The leading term is the term
containing the leading coefficient
and the highest degree.
• The constant is the number without
variable.
Let’s take a look at this table!
Recap!
What a polynomial function?
It is a function which involves only
nonnegative integer powers or only positive
integer exponents
Recap!
• In order to identify the degree of a function, what
is your consideration to make?

Inspecting the exponents of the terms in the

polynomial function. The highest exponent is the
degree of the polynomial function.
Recap!
• How can you determine a polynomial function
from not?
It is not a polynomial function if a) the polynomial has
a negative exponent; b) if a polynomial function has a
radical in it; c) there are any variable in the denominator
of a fraction; d) the exponent is a fraction.
Recap!
• What do you call the term containing the leading
coefficient and the highest degree?

Leading term
Recap!
• The leading coefficient is the coefficient of the
term with the highest degree.

The constant is the number without variable
