Temperature
- is the hotness or coldness of
a body/object. It can be
expressed in “degrees
Celsius”.

Thermometer
- is an instrument for measuring
temperature.

Celsius scale (centigrade scale)


- is a temperature scale based on 0° for the
freezing point of water and 100° for the boiling
point of water. This scale was first introduced by
(and is named after) the Swedish physicist,
astronomer, and engineer Anders Celsius.
Thermometer (alcohol/mercury)

glass tube - holds the glass bulb

scale - tells how far the alcohol/mercury rises

ethanol/mercury - the liquid that rises when it’s


hot and goes down when it’s cold

glass bulb - holds the alcohol or mercury


Points to Remember

● The normal body temperature


is 37°C.
● The boiling point of water is
100°C and the freezing point is
0°C.
● Each space in the number
scale represents 1°C. The
numbers below 0 are written
with a minus (-) sign.
● To read a thermometer, find
the level of the mercury or the
ethanol.
