The document discusses Brushless DC (BLDC) motors. It explains that a BLDC motor uses electronic commutation rather than brushes, and consists of a stator with electromagnetic coils and a rotor made of permanent magnets. It provides details on how BLDC motors work by controlling current to the stator coils. Key advantages are high efficiency, controllability, durability and low noise. While more expensive, BLDC motors are increasingly used in applications like fans, drones and robots due to these benefits.

THE BRUSHLESS DC
MOTOR What is a BLDC motor?
A Brushless DC Electric Motor (BLDC)
is an electric motor powered by a direct current voltage supply and commutated electronically instead of by brushes like in conventional DC motors. BLDC motors are more popular than the conventional DC motors nowadays, but the development of these type of motors has only been possible since the 1960s when semiconductor electronics were developed. How is it built?
The BLDC motor consists of two main
bodies: • The stator: which is the still part of the motor, on which the electromagnetic coils are wrapped; • The rotor: which is the rotating part, as the name implies, and it’s made of one or more permanent magnets. The rotor can be either internal or external, either way its functionality is not affected. How does it work? With the brushed motor, rotation is achieved by controlling the magnetic fields generated by the coils on the rotor, while the magnetic field generated by the stationary magnets remains fixed. To change the rotation speed, you change the voltage for the coils. With a BLDC motor, it is the permanent magnet that rotates; rotation is achieved by changing the direction of the magnetic fields generated by the surrounding stationary coils. To control the rotation, you adjust the magnitude and direction of the current into these coils. Since the rotor is a permanent magnet, it needs no current, eliminating the need for brushes and commutator. Current to the fixed coils is controlled from the outside. What are the pros and cons?
• The first big advantage is efficiency, because
they are always at maximum torque, no matter the speed. • The second big advantage is controllability. BLDC motors can be controlled, using feedback mechanisms, to delivery precisely the desired torque and rotation speed. • BLDC motors also offer high durability and low electric noise generation, thanks to the lack of brushes. With brushed motors, the brushes and commutator wear down as a result of continuous moving contact, and also produce sparks where contact is made. • The only main downside is that the amount of circuitry involved is much higher than a traditional DC motor, which makes it a more expensive option in contrast. We have decided to use a BLDC motor to drive our Why have we go-kart because the presence of a driver to power it makes it much more controllable. decided to use The absence of brushes makes it more reliable for a it in our high-power application like this one. Torque is an essential part of a driving motor, so project? having an adjustable torque means that we can be sure the go-kart moves as we intend it to. We’ve seen that BLDC motors offer high efficiency and controllability, and that they have a long operating life. Because of their efficiency and longevity, they are widely used in devices that run continuously. They have long been used in washing machines, air conditioners, and What are other other consumer electronics; and more recently, they are appearing in fans, where their high efficiency has applications of contributed to a significant reduction in power consumption. a BLDC We can expect to see BLDC motors used in a wider range of applications in the future. For example, they will motor? probably be widely used to drive service robots. BLDC motors are also ideal for drones. Their ability to deliver precision control makes them especially suited for multirotor drones, where the drone’s attitude is controlled by precisely controlling the rotational speed of each rotor.
