WHAT HAPPENS WHEN DC SERIES MOTOR
IS GIVEN AC SUPPLY?
• Eddy Current losses will increase
• Torque developed will be Pulsating between 0 and maximum value.
• Reduced output Power factor.
• Transformer Emf is induced. So Sparking at brushes is more.
• Large voltage drop due to its high inductance.
• Starting torque is also very poor.
MODIFICATIONS MADE IN DC SERIES
MOTOR
• Entire iron structure of the field cores and yoke should be laminated.
• Interpoles are Provided to eliminate Sparking at brushes.
• we can reduce the field winding reactance by reducing the number of turns in the field winding.
 But there is one problem: on reducing the number of turns, field mmf will decrease and due to this the air gap flux
decrease. The overall result of this is that there is an increase in the speed of the motor but decrease in the motor
torque which is not desired.
 So we will reduce field turns but increase the armature conductor turns. But overall reactance is not reduced.
 So Compensating Winding is Used
 Two types are there:
1. Conductively compensated type of motors.
2. Inductively compensated type of motors
CONDUCTIVELY COMPENSATED TYPE OF MOTORS

Given below is the circuit diagram of the conductively compensated type of motors. In this type of
motor, the compensating winding is connected in series with the armature circuit. The winding is
put in the stator slots. The axis of the compensating winding is 90 o (electrical) with main field axis.
INDUCTIVELY COMPENSATED TYPE OF MOTORS
In this type of motor, the compensating winding has no interconnection with the armature circuit of
the motor. In this case, a transformer action will take place as the armature winding will act as
primary winding of the transformer and the compensation winding will acts as a secondary
winding. The current in the compensating winding will be in phase opposition to the current in the
armature winding.
HOW TRANSFORMER EMF IS REDUCED IN
OLDEN DAYS
• It is reduced using high resistance leads from the winding tapping points to the commutator
segments
• Such high resistance leads form paths for both main current as well as circulating currents.
• So copper loss will increase.
INTERPOLES

• Generally Interpoles are used for improving Commutation.

• Here it is used to neutralize the Transformer EMF as well.
• Shunt resistor is connected with the Interpoles.
• This enables the circulating currents to be reduced to lower values over range of speeds and
loads, so that good commutation is achieved for normal running conditions.
