The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) scheme was launched in 2016 to provide LPG connections to women from below poverty line households. The objective is to promote women empowerment, provide healthy cooking fuel, and prevent health hazards from using solid fuels. 5 crore LPG connections will be provided over 3 years with Rs. 1600 financial support per connection. The scheme aims to achieve universal LPG coverage, empower women, reduce their cooking time and drudgery, and generate rural employment. While it has increased LPG access, issues around affordability of refills remain a challenge.
