RELATIVE PRONOUN

The relative pronoun is the subject/object of the relative


clause.
By using the relative pronoun, we do not repeat the
subject/object.

Example:
I talked to the woman who was sitting next to me.

WHO
We use who in relative clauses to refer to people.
Example:
That is the boy who doesn’t like me
(That is the boy, the boy doesn’t like me)

I think there’d be a lot of children who’d love you


(I think there’d be a lot of children, the children would love you)
WHOM
We use whom to refer to people in formal styles or in
writing, when the person is the object of the verb.

Example:
He is George whom you met at our house last year
(He is George, you met him at our house last year)

They met Ms. Berta whom I called yesterday


(They met Ms. Berta, I met her yesterday)
WHOSE
We usually use whose as a relative pronoun to indicate possession by
people and animals. In more formal styles we can also use it for things. We
use whose before nouns instead of a possessive expression (my, your, his,
her, its, our, their, x’s)

Example:
He’s marrying a girl whose family don’t like him
(He is marrying a girl, a girl’s family don’t like him)

I laughed at my uncle, his hair is so funny


(I laughed at my uncle whose hair is so funny)
WHICH
We use which in relative clauses to refer to things. Information in this
relative clause is not really important (you can remove that).

Example:
You need to tick the box which says yes
(You need to tick the box, the box says yes)

Another activity which I have chosen is photography


(I have chosen another activity, another activity is photography)
THAT
We use which in relative clauses to refer to people and things. This
relative pronoun is neutral.

Example:
The 8.30 is the train that you need to get
(The 8.30 is the train, you need to get the 8.30)

She blamed herself for everything that had happened


(Everything had happened, she blamed herself for everything)
1. He is a painter. His paint won an award last year.
2. She is my little cousin. I really love her.
3. I want to go to the minimarket, the minimarket is very
quiet.
4. James is a person who really likes helping others.
5. I want to watch a movie that has Tony Stark in it.
