WHAT IS COSTUME?
Costumes are particular style of clothing
worn to portray the wearer as a character
or type of character in a theatrical
performance, stage, film or television.
Simply put, they are attires and clothes
worn by actors and actresses to assist
them assume various forms of characters
aside their true self.
WHAT IS MAKE-UP?
Make-up in drama is any substance
applied on the actor’s body as an
enhancement or aid to characterization.

Costume and makeup is an


interpretative tool in drama that
enhances and describes the actor’s
appearance during a performance.
TYPES OF MAKE-UP
Straight Make-up and Character Make up

Straight Make-up:
Straight make-ups are basic make-ups for
actors and actresses. It does not require a
complete alteration of their true self.
Character Make-up:
Character make-ups are applied to completely
transform an actor or actress. They are more
detailed form of make-up that enables the
actor/actress assume the character he or she is
playing.
USES OF MAKE-UP
Alter Appearance: A major function of makeup in drama
or theatre is to change the physical appearance of an actor
and enable him assume the character he is to play.

Enhance Appearance: Make-up is also used in drama


and theatre to make actors and stresses look more
beautiful/elegant. Here, the features of the face and body
are heightened and symbolic aspects emphasized.

Tells the period of a play: Make-up can be used to


indicate the time/period that a play is set in.
