 It describes a wide phenomena including, a


process, a condition, a system,
a force or an age.
 Examples:
 1. historical process

migration)

 It is derived from the word


“global” which refers to
expansive interconnectivity
of locality- spanning local
sites of social, cultural,
economic and political life.

 Globalization is a historical
process which is the result of
human innovation and
technological processes.
DEVELOPMENT OF
GLOBALIZATION
 When did globalization begin?
 Most proposed starting points center on
 one of three historical events:
 1. the Industrial Revolution about 1800;
 2. Western maritime
 expansion around 1500;
 3. the integration of Asia around 1000 or
earlier.
 The use of internet in the 1980’s intensified
globalization.
MODERNIZATION CONCEPT
 DEFINITION: Modernization, in sociology, the
transformation from a traditional, rural,
agrarian society to a secular, urban,
industrial society.

 All the features that are associated with


modernity can be shown to be related to the
set of changes that, some 250 years ago,
brought into being the industrial type of
society.
MODERNIZATION CONCEPT
 Renaissance, Reformation and the
Revolutions (America, French and Industrial
Revolution of England) paved the way to
radical shifts in the political, economic, and
socio-cultural changes in the society.

emphasizes the way
international economic
exchanges are increasing in
frequency, creating greater
interdependence between
national economies and
facilitating their integration.

 2. Multi Dimensional Perspective – recognizes
that globalization is driven primarily by
economic forces through enhanced
communication, technology, movement and
political cooperation.
 Ex. Mass Media (Public Utilities and Private
Social Media sites) and Mass Travel
(Passports, Citizenship, Security regulations)

 3. Cosmopolitan Perspective – posits that the
world/states can cooperate through multi
lateral institutions, international law, human
rights convention to promote well being and
social justice.
 Ex. United Nations, International Courts,
International laws and treaties.

 4. Unipolar Perspective – amounts to the
exercise of imperial power.
 Ex. “Benevolent Assimilation” or “benevolent
domination” US exercise of economic,
diplomatic and military power to protect US
interests and values.
