The document discusses using transparent concrete to control corrosion of piles in construction projects. Transparent concrete is made by adding glass fibers to concrete mixtures, allowing light to pass through. It has comparable structural properties to normal concrete. Corrosion is a risk for underwater piles, but can be managed through protective coatings, cathodic protection, or suspended anodes. The document proposes using transparent concrete in pile construction to avoid corrosion while also allowing light reflections in waterways to prevent accidents. However, transparent concrete is more expensive than normal concrete.

What is Transparent Concrete or Light Transmitting
Concrete

Transparent concrete also called as translucent concrete

or light transmitting concrete is achieved by replacing
aggregates with transparent alternate materials.

The bonding material in transparent concrete may be able

to transmit light by using concrete mix.

By the use of optical fibers and fine concrete also used as
transparent concrete.

Transparent concrete was originally developed in 2001 by

a Hungarian architect Aronlosonzi by using glass fibers.
How Transparent concrete is made

1) Organic while adding glass fibers

Mostly it is same as regular concrete.

Glass fibers are spread throughout the

aggregate and cement mix.

Small layers of the concrete are poured

2) Layer formed after adding glass fibers
on top of each other and infused with
the fibers and then connected.

Process is tedious comparing to normal

concrete.
What are its Properties
96% traditional aggregate and cement.

By adding this in concrete its color will not changes, remains
same.

Transparent concrete is produced by mixing 4% to 5% volume

of optical fibers (Glass Fibers) in the concrete mixture.

This concrete has less weight compared to original concrete.

Transparent concrete and Structurally
Sound

Yes,
It is comparable to classic concrete and has already
been used in a variety of structures.
Corrosion of Piles
and
Underwater Piles

Corrosion of Piles

Corrosion can be defined as the deterioration of the metal due to reaction

with water and atmospheric air (or) the oxidation of metals catalyzed by
chemical reaction with the environment.

Underwater Piles

Piles are the substructure member of the building used to transfer the loads
from the super structure to the ground and structure is built in the water, the
piles are to driven in the water then they are subjected to corrosion.

Corrosion Management

 Before deciding on the methods for control of corrosion

to be applied, conceptual and feasibility studies have
been carried out.

Typically, corrosion management can be divided into

three major phases.

1) Protective Coating Protection

2) Cathodic Protection
3) Suspension Anodes Protection
CORROSION PROTECTION METHODS
1. Protective Coating

 In order to protect metals from corrosion, the contact between the

metal and the corrosive environment is to be cut off.

 This is done by coating the surface of metals with a continuous

non-porous material inert to the corrosive atmosphere.

Surface coatings are broadly classified into three:

a) Metallic Coatings
b) Inorganic Coatings
c) Organic Coatings
2.Cathodic Protection

The preferred technique is mainly used

in marine corrosion, based on historical
performance   and measurable results.

The cathodic protection (CP) , it is a

practice of using electrochemical
reactions to prevent the corrosion of
steel structures.

The main reason that accept is, cathodic

protection prevents corrosion on mainly
in underwater structures.
3.Suspension Anodes

Suspension Anode Delivery Systems

allow for strategic placement of
anodes in and around a marine
facility, providing optimum
distribution of current.

Many suspended anode systems are

also suitable for mounting on pilings,
or other structural steel.
STANDARDS AND CODES

There are no Indian standards codes as such for the control of

corrosion. The latest editions of the following organizations’
standards, codes, and guidelines shall be used for the design of
corrosion control systems:
  NACE International (formerly The National Association of Corrosion
Engineers)
  RP0169 – Control of External Corrosion on Underground or
Submerged.

American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)

  ASTM D512 – Standard Test Methods for Chloride Ion in Water

 ASTM D516 – Standard Test Method for Sulfate Ion in Water
 ASTM G51 – Standard Test Method for measuring pH of Soil for Use in
Corrosion Testing
USE OF TRANSPARENT CONCRETE

By adding this type of fibers in pile construction

we can avoid main thing is corrosion.

 By adding this, it gives a light reflections in the

river while in pile construction.

By this light reflections we can avoid accidents in

water ways in rivers.
CONCLUSION

Though there is no absolute way to eliminate all corrosion on

under water piles, there are some effective measures to control
them.

 The cathodic protection is found to be quite simple to employ

and mostly used in  marine conditions.

 The protective coatings are used in vast and expensive

structures and there is no any harmful to environment.

Big reason, that to avoiding this type of products in

construction, its costs is so much comparing to normal concrete.
