What is Tourism and
its importance?
Tourism is a multifaceted industry that involves
the movement of people (tourists) from their place
of residence to other destinations for leisure,
recreational, cultural, or business purposes.

It encompasses a wide range of activities and

services, including transportation,
accommodation, food and beverage services,
entertainment, and various attractions and
experiences.

2
Importance of Tourism:
1. Economic Impact: Tourism is a significant contributor to the economy of many countries and
regions. It generates revenue through various means such as accommodation, transportation,
dining, and entertainment. It also creates jobs in sectors like hospitality, transportation, and
tourism-related services, which can boost employment and income levels.
2. Foreign Exchange Earnings: Tourism often brings in foreign currency through international
tourists spending money in the destination country. This can help stabilize a nation's balance of
payments and improve its foreign exchange reserves.
3. Regional Development: Tourism can stimulate the development of less-developed or remote
regions by attracting visitors to areas that may not have many other economic opportunities. It
can lead to infrastructure development, improved facilities, and increased investment in these
areas.
4. Cultural Exchange: Tourism facilitates cultural exchange and cross-cultural understanding.
Tourists have the opportunity to experience and appreciate different cultures, traditions, and
lifestyles, leading to greater tolerance and intercultural dialogue.

3
Importance of Tourism:
5. Preservation of Heritage and Environment: Tourism can incentivize the preservation of
natural landscapes and cultural heritage. Tourist destinations often invest in the conservation
and restoration of historical sites, natural parks, and ecosystems to attract visitors.
6. Education and Learning: Tourism offers educational opportunities, as tourists can learn
about history, art, and local traditions by visiting museums, historical sites, and cultural
attractions. It also promotes experiential learning through hands-on experiences.
7. Promotion of Local Businesses: Tourism supports local businesses, including small
enterprises, artisans, and local producers. Visitors often purchase souvenirs and local
products, contributing to the livelihoods of local communities.
8. Social Benefits: Tourism can promote social interaction and understanding among people
from different backgrounds. It can also lead to the development of a sense of pride and
identity among local communities, as they showcase their culture and heritage to visitors.

4
Importance of Tourism:
9. Infrastructure Development: The need to accommodate
tourists often drives improvements in transportation,
communication, and public services in tourist destinations,
benefiting both tourists and local residents.
10. Diplomacy and International Relations: Tourism can be
a tool for diplomacy and international relations, fostering
friendly relations between countries and promoting peace and
cooperation.

5
Importance of Tourism:

Despite its numerous benefits,

tourism can also have negative
impacts, including over-tourism,
environmental degradation, cultural
commodification, and economic
inequality.
Therefore, sustainable tourism
practices are essential to balance the
advantages of tourism with its
potential drawbacks and ensure long-
term benefits for all stakeholders.
6

Lets talk
about
History!

A Brief History of Tourism

People have always had a need to travel, be it to explore and

discover new lands or for our own enjoyment.

We can trace the origin of the modern concept of tourism back to

the 17th century, when young nobles from western and northern
European countries made what was called the Grand Tour: a trip
around Europe (usually covering France, Germany, Italy and Greece)
with the main purpose of soaking up history, art and cultural heritage.
It was considered a perfect way to be educated.
By the 18th century, this custom was widespread among wealthier
classes and it spread to other parts of the world, such as America.
Similarly, religious pilgrimages that were already popular during the
Middle Ages continued during this period.

A Brief History of Tourism

The Industrial Revolution, which began in the second half

of the 18th century, produced a major economic, social and
technological transformation that would spread to the rest of
the world. As a result of these changes, there was an exodus
from rural regions to growing big cities, which needed labor for
the new industry.

Therefore, new social classes appeared. Developments in

transport were also key. The improvements in freight and
passenger transport contributed to the birth of leisure, new
forms of entertainment and travel. People travelled mainly by
train, taking advantage of the fact that railway networks
connected the destinations in Europe and other parts of the
world.

10
A Brief History of Tourism

The 19th century saw the creation of

the first travel agencies. One of the
pioneers was Thomas Cook & Son,
which was the first to offer excursions
and holidays for groups, which included
transport, accommodation and food
tickets, thus making costs cheaper. This
would be the origin of what we now
know as package holidays.

11
A Brief History of Tourism

In the first half of the 20th century,

the tourism industry continued to grow
thanks to the mass production of
buses and cars. Coastal tourism began
to gain importance, and, after World
War II, the Mediterranean coast quickly
grew in popularity. Also, improvements
in air transport (charter flights) as well
as progress in labor legislation and a
growth in social welfare led to a boom
in tourism. 12
A Brief History of Tourism

The tourism sector suffered a

recession during the 1970s,
mainly due to the energy crisis,
leading to lower costs and prices.
That's when mass tourism
emerged. Travelling went from
being something only for an
exclusive group to become a
leisure activity within the reach of
many. 13
A Brief History of Tourism

In the following decades, there was a

progressive internationalization of hotel
companies, travel agencies and airlines.
New products and new leisure activities
were also offered, revolving around sports
and health, among others.

14
A Brief History of Tourism

Today, the tourism sector has become

one of the great economic engines in
many countries, forming part of the
international political agenda. In recent
years, with low-cost flights and the
existence of alternative accommodations,
managed by online companies, it is much
easier for tourists to afford to travel and
they can design their itinerary and
experiences to their liking.

15
A Brief History of Tourism

Tourism not only impacts the local economy, but it is

also starting to affect the social structures, culture and
lifestyle of the destinations visited. Therefore, the
challenge now is to provide solutions by developing a
tourism awareness that is respectful with the
environment and the local way of living of its
inhabitants.
