A national passion
• Sport plays a more important part in
people’s lives in Britain than it does in
most other countries.
• Millions take part in some kind of sport at
least once a week.
• Every newspaper, national or local quality
or popular, devotes several pages entirely
to sport.
Not just sports, they are also competitive on other
enthusiasms, Gardening is one typical example:
• Gardeners will display their cabbages, leeks,
onions, carrots, flowers and many other floral
plants..
• All of this hoping they will be judged ‘the
best’.
The social importance of sport
• Sports hold a significant social important
in Britain.
• It plays a central role in the nation’s
culture, brings people together and foster
a sense of community and national
identity.
• Every local authorities have a duty to
provide and maintain playing fields and
other facilities, which are usually very
cheap and sometimes even free.
• Prestigious sporting events like
Wimbledon, The Grand National, English
Cup Final... are long-awaited by millions
of people around the world.
• Sport also plays a substantial part in
promoting physical and mental well-
being. It encourages an active lifestyle,
promoting fitness and overall health.
• Sport and physical activites were found to
add £85.5 billion to the English economy
and society.

which is particularly popular in the

of 11 players. They play on a field at the center of

The Heysel Stadium disaster
occurred on May 29, 1985, during the European Cup final
between Liverpool and Juventus (Italia). The disaster resulted
in the death of 39 people and left more than 600 injured.

supporters, they were arguing and pushing each other towards
the concrete wall, it collapsed, which crushed on many people.

Gambling is very widespread throughout all social classes,
the word ‘sportsman' used to be a synonym for ‘gambler’.

disaster.
Horse racing remains a focal point for gambling, with billions
of pounds being bet on horse races annually. Commonly
known as 'bookmakers' they sometimes announce themselves
as 'turf accountants' on their
shop fronts.
• The national lottery stands as the most favored form of gambling in the UK,
engaging over half of the adult population.
• Bingo is another popular type of gambling, it often abtracts for middle-aged
working class women.
It's worth noting that there are segments of British society, particularly among Nonconformist
religious groups, where gambling is viewed with disapproval.
In 2005, the government announced plans to allow a number of Las Vegas style ‘super-
casinos’ in Britain, the plans were abandoned two years later.
