Different

Forms of
Literature in
American
Colonial
(1898-1940)
HISTORICAL
BACKGROUN
D  The Filipino Revolutionists won against the Spaniards
who colonized for more than 300 years.
 raised the Philippine flag as a symbol of our
independence.
 Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo was selected the first president
of the Philippine Republic but this was short lived.
The Philippine-American war resulted in the
defeat of Gen. Miguel Malvar in 1903
Many Filipino started writing again and the
nationalism of the people remain undaunted.
Filipino writers went into all forms of literature
like news reporting, poetry, stories, plays,
essays, and novels.
Their writings clearly depicted their love of
country and their longings for independence.
• The literary genres that flourished
during the American Period were
poetry, sarswela, short story, and the
novel. Poetry was written in the three
languages - Filipino, Spanish,
English, and in the different dialects.
BALAGTASAN
 named after Francisco F. Balagtas,
is a debate in verse, a poetical joust
done almost spontaneously between
protagonists who debate over the
pros and the cons of a certain issue.
Short stories of early Filipino fictionists
are marked with American style. This all
changed with the founding of the U. P.
Writers Club in 1926 whose aim was to
enhance and propagate the “language
of Shakespeare”.
Dead Stars (1925)
 Dead Stars is a short story by Paz
Marquez Benitez, written in 1925.
 The story is basically a compilation
of the circumstances that every man
has to go through in life.
With the printing industry in the hands of patriotic
investors, the printing press was used to block the
American culture from entering the Philippine
lifestyle. Newspapers in our different dialects
flourished all over the archipelago. With some
newspapers having a space for literary pieces, writers
were given the chance to show and prove the true
talent of the Filipinos.
El Nuevo Dia
 Don Sergio Osmeña’s rise to
national fame started with him
being a journalist. His career
as a journalist began on April
16, 1900 with the maiden

• Kahapon, Ngayon at Bukas (Yesterday, Today and
Tomorrow) by Aurelio Tolentino

• Tanikalang Ginto of Juan Abad

Kahapon, Ngayon
at Bukas
Kahapon, Ngayon at Bukas are
based on the history of the
Philippines. It shows the
importance of achieving
independence. It also shows the
Filipinos who betrayed and are
ready to fight fellow Filipinos
because of money.
Tanikalang
Ginto
This topic is dedicated to Nationalism.
It refers to freedom and love. My
attention is focused on the line "Sa
liwanag ay nalilito sa kung ano ang
gagawin pakakasalan ang nag-iisang
mahal na si K'ulayaw o ang
pagtanaw ng utang loob sa kaniyang
amain na si Maimbot”.
Opening of Public
Schools
 Education of became a very important issue for
the united states colonial government, since it
allowed it to spread their cultural values,
particularly the English language, to the Filipino
people.
 By 1901, public education was institutionalized
in the Philippines with English serving the
medium of instruction.
• Early Literary works in English showed
styles of which is American. It can also
be seen that writers who just started
learning English cannot fully showcase
their talent because of the lack of
mastery of the language.

• At the dawn of 20th century, American

culture began to establish its form grip
on the Filipino identity. They brought
another ground breaking cultural
milestone, the English language.

• The Philippine writers appreciated the

new styles and genres of writing that
they brought.
 Essay genre flourished on this period too.
Just as he was the pioneer in fiction,
Zoilo Galang broke new ground with
essays as well.

 In 1921, he published “Life and

Success”, the first Philippine book of
essays in English.
