WHAT IS COMPUTER?

Computer is an electronic device for

storing and processing data that run
on electricity. A computer has many
parts. All the parts of the computer
together make the computer system.
Computer devices
What are its Devices?

 INPUT DEVICES : The devices which are used

to input the data and the program in the
computer are known as "Input Devices'‘. Such as
keyboard, mouse, microphone, camera, and
scanner.

 OUTPUT DEVICES : The devices that help in

getting and viewing the desired results are
called output devices. Such as monitor, printer,
speaker etc.
 PROCESSING UNIT:
In the computer devices, a processing device is a part of
component in a computer that manages the storage and
retrieval of information.

Examples : central-processing units, computer motherboards,

network cards, graphics-processing units and sound cards.

 Storage Devices:
The Data storage is the recording of information/data in a
storage device.

Examples: DNA and RNA, handwriting, phonographic storing,

magnetic tape, memory chips and optical discs.
HOW STORAGE DEVICES WORK?

These devices use a mechanical device

known as a drive that connects to the
computing device. The disk (cartridge or
media) coated with iron oxide stores the
information and is inserted into the drive.
The drive rotates the disk at high speed
via motor.
Primary Storage Devices Examples
RAM and ROM:
Difference RAM ROM

Data- RAM is a volatile memory ROM is a non-volatile

Retention that could store the data memory that the could
as long as the power is retain the data even when
supplied. the power is turned off.

Read/Write Read and write operations Only read operations are

are supported. supported.
Use Used to store the data It is typically used to store
that has to be currently firmware or microcode,
processed by CPU which is used to initialize
temporarily. and control hardware
components of the
computer.
Secondary Storage Devices Examples:
 Secondary storage allows for the storage of data
ranging from a few bits to megabytes.

 These devices store virtually all programs and

applications stored on a computer, including the
operating system, device drivers, software
applications and general user data and more.

 Some of the secondary storage devices are internal

to the computer such as the hard disk drive, compact
disk drive and floppy disk drive but floppy disk drive
is not being used any more.
1. Memory Card :
 It is generally used in digital cameras. printers,
game consoles, etc.

 It is also used to store large amounts of data and

is available in different sizes.

 To run a memory card on a computer you require

a separate memory card reader.
2. DVD:
 It is known as Digital Versatile Disc. They are
circular flat optical discs used to store data. It has
two different sizes one is 4.7GB single-layer discs
and other one is 8.5GB double-layer discs.

 DVDs look like CDs but the storage capacity of

DVDs is more than as compared to CDs.
3.Cloud and virtual storage:

 Digital or cloud storage systems have replaced

secondary memory in recent years.

 We can keep our documents and other items on

the cloud for just as much as we subscribe to
cloud storage.

 Many corporations, namely Amazon, Google,

Microsoft, and others, offer cloud services
4.HARD-DISK:
 It’sa hard disc drive (HDD) that uses magnetic
storage to store and retrieve data.

 It’s a non-volatile device that stores data that

could be changed or deleted an infinite number
of times.
