RECOVERY (%)
Recovery = Permeate flow x 100
Feed flow

= 25 m3/h x 100
38.5 m3/h

Recovery = 65%
COMONLY USED CALCULATION IN
R.O. SYSTEM

SALT PASSAGE (%)

Salt passage = Permeate salt concentration x 100
Feed salt concentration

= 80 ppm x 100
6500 ppm

Salt passage = 1.2 %

COMONLY USED CALCULATION IN
R.O. SYSTEM

SALT REJECTION (%)

Salt rejection = 100 - Salt passage

= 100 - 1.2%

Salt rejection = 98.8 %

CHEMICAL DOSING SAMPLE CALCULATION

To dose 1.5 mg/l of chlorine on the feed line with a raw water feed flow of
924 m3 per day, we should consider the strength of Sodium Hypochlorite
which is 12% Cl2, to calculate the required quantity.

Example:
Feed flow = 924 m3 per day
Required dosage =1.5 mg/l of chlorine (Cl2)
Sodium Hypochlorite strength =12% (Cl2)
Specific gravity =1.2
of Sodium Hypochlorite
COMONLY USED CALCULATION IN
R.O. SYSTEM
= PPM x Flow (m3/hr) x 24
1000

= 1.5 mg/l x 924 m3/day

1000

= 1.4 kg/day (of 100% Cl2)

= 1.4 kg/day (of 100% Cl2)

0.12 (12% Cl2 Sodium Hypochlorite)

= 11.7 kg/day, of Sodium Hypochlorite

COMONLY USED CALCULATION IN
R.O. SYSTEM

To convert, kg/day to l/day (liter per day) divide the kg/day with the
chemical specific gravity.

= 11.7 kg/day Sodium Hypochlorite

1.2 (Specific gravity of Sod. Hypochlorite)

Required quantity of
Sodium Hypochlorite = 9.75 l/day (2.6 GPD)

To calculate the Dosing Pump output, calculate as follows:

PUMP OUTPUT = MAX PUMP OUTPUT X % SPEED X

% STROKE

If the dosing pump is set at 30% Stroke and 36% Speed, the
approximate pump output is:

Use MAX output (from dataplate of dosing pump) = 24 GPD

24 GPD X 0.30 X 0.36 = 2.6 GPD
