LESSON #1: HISTORY OF
TRANSPORTATION
Lesson Objectives:

a. Relate the dates, personalities, & significant events,

involvingthe history of transportation;
b. Compare the peculiarities between early and
modern transportation
1
HISTORY OF TRANSPORTATION

• It is the movement or conveying of persons

and hoods from one location to another.
• from the Latin word "Terans" meaning across
or and move and "Portare" means to carry

2
EARLY MODES OF
TRANSPORTATION

• Man Power
• Animal Power
• Wind Power
3
MAN POWER
1. walking
2. Carrying Pole
3. Backload and tumpline
4. Sledge on rollers
5. sledge on runners
6. travois
4
ANIMAL POWER
1.ox
2.Raindeer
3.Dog
4.Donkey
5.Llama
6.Elephant
7.Horse
8.Camel
5
9.Yak
WIND POWER

1. Ancient Chinese kite

2. Da Vinci's Ornithopter
3. Montgolfiere Ballon
4. Siemens' Racket Plane
5. Wright Brothers Flying Machine
6
DEVELOPMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

300 B.C / Sumerians

First people used wheels made of tree planks held together by cross-pieces with a hole in the center
for the axle. In some places, a solid disk cut from a log was used.

1675 B.C / Egypt

Wheeled vehicles came into general use.

1st Century B.C/ China, chou Dynasty

Known for its fine road system. There were so many carriages on the roads that it became
necessary to establish speed limits and other traffic regulations. The Great Wall of China, one of
the Seven Wonders of the World, is a prominent structure of the roadway.
7
DEVELOPMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

4th Century B.C / Romans

First road builders. They built smooth, hard surfaced roads wherever they ruled, from England
they built roads that have many sections & are still in use today.

1784 / William Murdoch

A working model of the steam locomotive carriage was built.

1803 / Richard Trevithick

Responsible for building a 10-seater London Steam carriage.
He also built a steam-powered railway locomotive 8
DEVELOPMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

1816 / Karl Von Drais

Inventor of bicycles in Germany, used his bicycle in collecting taxes from tenants.

1862 / Nicolas Joseph Cugnot of France

Built the first automobile, self-powered steam engine

1876 / Nicolaus otto

Invented an effective gas motor engine and built the first
practical four-stroke internal combustion engine called "Otto Cycle Engine" and when
completed built it into a motorcycle.
9
DEVELOPMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

1885 / Gottlieb Daimler

Invented the first real motorcycle

1879 / Benz
Granted with a patent for his first engine, which had been designed in 1878.

1806 / Francois Issac de Rivaz

A Swiss inventor who designed the first internal combustion engine fueled by a mixture of
oxygen and hydrogen.

2005 / Toyota
Developed the hydrogen-powered Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehic (FCHV).
10
DEVELOPMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

December 10, 1868 / J P Knight

Installed the first traffic light outside the British Houses of Parliament in London

1912 / Lester Wire

A policeman who invented the first red-green electric traffic lights.

August 5, 1914 / American Traffic Signal Company

Installed a traffic signal system on the corner of East 105th Street and Euclid Avenue in
Cleveland, with two colors, red and green, and a buzzer. It was designed by James Hoge

1920 / William Potts

A police officer who created the first four-way, three-color traffic light in
Detroit, Michigan
LESSON #2 WHEELED VEHICLES &
ROAD HISTORY
A. WHEEL was invented probably in Western Asia forward in
transportation
1.Ljubljana Marshe wooden wheel
2.Solid wheels on fixed axle
3.summerian chariot with flanks wheel
4.Greek quadrica with spoked wheels
5.Italian cocchio 1288 11
B. ANCIENT ROME
1. Arcera
2. Basterna
3. Benna
4. Carpentum
5. Carruca
6. Carrus
7. Cisium
8. Pilentum
9. Four-wheeled plaustrum
10.Raeda
11.Sarracum
12.Tensa 12
C. WHEELED VEHICLES AND CARRIAGES
could not use the narrow paths and trails used by pack
animals, and early roads were soon built to
accommodate the larger transportation vehicles

D. THE ROMANS
were the major road builders in the ancient world. The Romans road network
reached a total of about 50,000 miles (80,000 km), with FEEDER road
branching out from the main highways. It was costly because its deep
foundation, formed by layer after heavy stones, was necessary to make roads
that would carry heavy traffic for many years.
13
E. JOHN L. MACADAM
did not abandon the theory of feeder road building and
perfected the macadamized road in England about 1815

F. AFTER THE FALL OF THE ROMANS

in the 5th century, land haulage (or colonizing foreign lands by European
kingdoms and countries) generally declined because highways suffered from
inadequate maintenance

13
LESSON #3: FUNDAMENTALS OF
TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT

• What is TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT?

•is the application of the processes and skills in planning, organizing, staffing,
directing. coordinating, and budgeting to traffic affairs?
•Also refers to activities undertaken by a highway transportation agency to
improve roadway system safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of both providers
and consumers of transportation services

13
Types of Traffic Management;
1. Traditional traffic engineering tools or devices used to regulate or
control traffic such as traffic lights, traffic signals, or pavement
markings, traffic islands, and other devices that could control or direct
the flow of traffic.
2. Advanced technology like the Intelligent Transportation System
(ITS). Examples are the installation of road sensors for emergency
cars, global positioning devices on motor vehicles, and road sensors
attached to traffic signal lights.
WHY IS TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT IS
NECESSARY?

In every traffic management, three elements are necessary to be

considered.

1. Road Traffic System

2. Road Users
3. Road Enforcement
AGENCIES INVOLVED IN TRAFFIC
MANAGEMENT;
1. Department of Transportation
2. City or Municipal Engineer's office
3. Department of Public Works and Highway (DPWH)
4. Legislative (Congress/City or Municipal Boards
5. PNP - HPG (Highway Patrol Groups)
6. Traffic Management Bureaus (TMBs)
7. Academic institution
8. Court
9. Public Information Office
10.Citizens Support group
11.Baranggay Peacekeeping action team (BPAT) members
12.Tri-Media (including internet)
